/**
* validate.js: unobtrusive HTML form validation.

[code]....

I want to build a table that knows where it has been clicked. I found the
following solution myself. Are there better ones?
http://www.student.oulu.fi/~pkarjala/question1.html
(tested on Mozilla 1.7.8/Linux)
It sets the event handlers for each TD in the build() loop, including a
parameter in the function call that is different for each TD.
The whole thing is a simple example with a table with 5 by 5 cells. If you
click on a cell it's supposed to change color. Naturally, my question is
one more general terms. How to make big tables that associate various
event handlers with various cells, and where you will know exactly which
element triggered the event? How to make it simple and maintainable?

which is the recommended way to bind event handlers to elements. Preferably without giving each of them an id. As far as I know, the "classic" way (<input onchange="...">) is considered deprecated and evil. So what is the jQuery way of doing this?

I am trying to add onclick event handler to many objects but I can't understand why it doesn't work. To assign event handler I use traditional approach as described in [URL]Heres the code (extract.js):
Code JavaScript:
//the class
function extract(){
[code]....
I know that both select tags don't have options, but I generate them with JS because they hold sequential numbers and this part has no impact on the problem at hand.Both functions help select next or previous index in a given select tag for greater comfort

I have nested markup like this
Code HTML4Strict:
<li><span></span></li>
I have different click functions, one attached to the li and the other to the span.
When I click on the span they both run. Ending the span's event handler with return false; prevented that from happening, which is what I want. But I'm not sure I understand why it worked.. I know, for example, if I was clicking on an anchor, return false would stop the browsers default action of following the href value. Same for submitting a form, return false will stop this. I don't think I understand why this would stop a completely different function from being triggered..

I would like to add an event handler to the submit() method on the form. If the form contains an elemant recaptcha, it should show a recpatcha in a modal, and upon completing that recaptcha, assign the entered captcha to that element to be submitted long the form.
Basically, I would be able to attach the code that renders the modal and the recaptcha form in the .submit event handler.
I was just wondering; if we have multiple form.submit() handlers that we attach to the forms. in what order are they executed? and what if one of the handlers return false - will the others still be executed? What if we add the "preventDefault" call in any of these handlers?
Basically - I need to know how I can make sure that this handler I'm attaching to the form does not interfere with any other handlers that may have been attached to the forms submit event...

In our ordering system, we have to type in various values for several items at a time. This means in one single form, for one order, we could be typing in a batch number 4 or 5 times. I can valiadate this easy enough with Javascript when there is only 1 line. But what if there is more than 1?
With PHP you add [] to the end of the form element's name. But how do I get javascript to work with this?
Code:
Basically, the batch number, expiry date and pallet/box number is mandetory. If they arn't entered, it needs to fail (return false). It doesn't seem to be doing anything, just moving on to the next part which is checking other parts of the form which isn't repeated.

I have a dynamicly generated form (well the elements are at least) that looks something like this:
while( not end of returned records):
<input name="plan_id[]" type="checkbox" id="" value="<?=
$row_plans->planid ?>">
<input name="num_of_pockets[<?= $row_plans->planid ?>]"
type="text" id="num_of_pockets[]" value="<?=
$row_plans->num_of_pockets ?>" size="5" >
endwhile;
Basically it loops thru the table and creates a row of fields in the form that use the array identifiers '[]' so that I can loop thru them with PHP when the page is submitted.
The key for each array element is the id of the row from the database. So checkbox[] (with value "1") and cost[1] are on the same line in the form. The next line may not necessarily have cost[2] in it, it may be cost[3] or [4], depending the id from the database.
Is there some way I can loop thru these form elements in javascript?

I am creating an array based on form elements. I then am trying to create an IF (and nested IF) statement to check if the fields are empty and then with the nested IF statement use certain fields to create mathematical functions.
So far I have this:
function QuantityMWh(form) {
var formchk = document.forms[0]
for (i = 0; i < formchk.elements.length; i++) {
if (formchk.elements[1].value == "" && formchk.elements[2].value == "") {
[Code]....
It's only checking the first field and not the second, and vice versa. i.e. if only one field has text then it passes.

I have a form that has an array of input values:
I do this so I can loop through the values in php... now...that's the easy part... the hard part comes to this:
Next to each of those boxes is a search button that allows the user to open up a popup window that they can search for an item, and select the item. Once they select the item it should populate that particular input box with the selected item. I can easily do this with a uniquely named input box, but can't seem to figure out how to do it with an array of input boxes...

Sorry for the re-post but the original message subject no longer
applies. If I try this in IE5, it doesn't work:
<script type="text/javascript">
window.onload = foo;
</script>
<body>
whereas this does work:
<body onload="javascript:foo();">
This is not the way I want to handle events. I checked MSDN and it seems
to indicate that the first way should work. Is there something I can do
to get the first way (event handlers?) to work in IE5?

I use a very handy function (onsubmit) to validate empty fields in a form:
PHP Code:
function validate_form(){
var x = document.getElementById("form1");
for(var i=0; i<x.length; i++){
if((x.elements[i].value == "") && (x.elements[i].title)){
[Code]....
It worked like a charm, until I had to change a dropdown dynamically with ajax. I have two dropdowns, the second being populated with ajax (php, mysql) by the option selected in the first one. The second dropdown has the title attribute filled so the previous function can validate and ask the user to select something. However, it seems like fields loaded dynamically with ajax wont appear inside the x.elements[] array. I've tested it over and over, it keeps ignoring it. It isn't even in the array. Why?

I have a script in which a function launched by a START button
continuously calculates and writes a value to a text box. The
calculation is done in a for loop. In the loop is a conditional that is
a global variable, a boolean. If the boolean is true, break ends the
loop (or is supposed to!). A STOP button has an onclick function that
sets the global variable to true.
What happens, though, is that the function for the STOP button is
not executed until the for loop reaches the maximum value set for i.
Anyone know how you can get one button to stop a process started by
another?

Is it necessary to return a value from the event handlers? For
instance, what does the return value in the following code signify?
What will be its impact if it returned otherwise (true)?
<a href="http://www.w3schools.com"
onmouseover="alert('An onMouseOver event'); return true">
<img src="Click.gif" width="100" height="30">

Here is a little sample code:
<html>
<head>
<script type="text/javascript">
function BodyClick() {
// How to access the event object here?
alert(window.event.shiftKey);
}
function WindowLoad() {
document.body.onclick = BodyClick;
}
window.onload = WindowLoad;
</script>
</head>
<body></body>
</html>
It does not work in FireFox. How to make it work?
My only requirement is that I need to assign the BodyClick() handler
dynamically in script (not statically in HTML). So I cannot use this solution:
<body onclick="BodyClick(event)">

I've been teaching myself javascript and I'm a bit confused about the whole events business. I've been reading the Sitepoint book (among a bunch of others) and when it gets to Ch 4 things get down right confusing. They claim that inline event handlers are "so 1998", something I've heard before and then they proceed to write some pretty complex library files to get around the fact that IE <= 7 doesn't support much of the alternative ways of handling events--a familiar enough story. Anyhow, it seems that many many tutorials all over the internet (and countless pages) resort to inline event handlers as the standard. So, I'm confused. I obviously need to know inline event handlers if I intend to work as a web developer even though it's so 1998. Obviously inline even handlers are not quite on par with inline font attributes and transparent gif files despite the language one often hears. Can someone set me straight, and if possible suggest a brilliant tutorial, book chapter, or website that lays everything crystal clear for me?
