Keeping A "Persistent" XML Document In Memory

I have an application that uses the Google Maps API to display
customized maps via a generated XML file. The XML is generated via a
"Wizard" system to determine what the XML holds.
I am looking for a way to keep the XML file "persistent" across the
pages via Javascript. The way the Maps API works is that the Client
feeds the items to be mapped to google, which generates the maps.
Storing the XML file on the server would mean I would have to download
the (possibly large) XML file each time the next wizard page displayed.
If the XML file was persistent on the client side (stored as a string
or document object), the display time would be cut, and my bandwidth
limits from my webhost would not be in danger of being hit.
I'd rather not have to access the wizard system session variables if I
can avoid it. Any ideas/references to code?

When I use mouse wheel in Firefox to scroll contents of the DIV, memory usage in Firefox goes through the roof. Code above is a fully working page, if anyone would like to see what's up, just load it up, and start moving your mouse wheel in the area with text. You don't actually have to scroll the text, just moving the wheel back and forth in that DIV will do. Memory usage will start going up quite fast, and after you stop moving the wheel, it will finally come down a bit after a short while. I've highlighted in red the line where mousewheel event is registered for Firefox. I'm not sure if it's really a problem, but since Opera and IE don't have any strange memory usage, and Firefox does, maybe I did something wrong. In everyday use it shouldn't matter [don't expect to have kilometers of content to scroll], but anyway, it is a bit unsettling.

I have a web app, written in Javascript, that communicates to a back-end
server via XMLHttpRequest.
The logic goes:
* Login
* Perform transaction
* (delay while the user does something)
* Perform transaction
* ...
* Logout
It would be really convenient if I could make the whole thing a single HTTP
connection. That way, I avoid needing IPC and session management at the
server end, and a single instance of a CGI script can represent the entire
session. When the socket gets closed, the CGI script terminates and
implicitly logs the user off. All very simple.
Can I use HTTP pipelining with XMLHttpRequest to do this? The docs seem to
say (it's quite hard to tell) that I have to call open() after each send(),
which will presumably create a new HTTP session. Can I 'persuade' the
browser to reuse an existing session?

I have two divs, one with the ID 'leftcol' and the other 'bodydiv'. I have found some code on DynamicDrive site to resize and hide the leftcol div but I want bodydiv to expand to fill the space. Both are absolute divs though, and leftcol is simply "left: 210px;" and "width:auto;". The dynamic drive script is persistent so if I hide the menu it is still hidden on the next page. I need to do something similar. Say for example that I call it toggle (elementId), I need to hide leftcol and set "left: 0px;" for bodydiv, but next time show leftcol (can use the existing animation function for that) and set left back to 210px for leftcol. As I say, it must persist on each machine.

I am trying to set up a chat window in my website. Pretty much I have the main page, and a pop-out child page that contains the chat. I want users to be able to change pages on the main page, but the issue is that when they change the page, the reference to the child page (where the chat is) is lost, is there a way to make the window object persistent such as serializing it and putting it in a cookie? It looks like JSON is made for like functions, but can't really serialize a window object.

I am trying to create dynamic content using append and appendTo functions. It seems to work fine and I can see the new elements on the fly using a Button to execute a customized function based on this jquery methods. something like this:

the problem is that when i refresh the page the new content disappear of the DOM.

I've been putting together a small pet project. Once it was finished i realised it had a gigantic memory leak inside of it. I tried to read up on the subject, but couldn't find the source of the problem via the articals.

I was wondering how good is JavaScript with memory management. I have
an object called MANAGER that has a list of other objects, each one
managing a single DOM nodes, etc. In my implementation of
MANAGER.reset(), I simply recreate my MANAGER.object_list = new
object(); and do a single MANAGER.domnode.innerHTML = '' as apposed to
getting my hands dirty. Is my app leaking memory?

Internet Explorer leaks memory when I update a div container using
innerHTML, this does not occur in firefox. This would not be a problem
except the webpage is required to be left on for weeks on end without
being restarted. I presume the issue with innerHTML is that Internet
Explorer apparently parses what you give it and then decides on how to
construct the dom elements itself, so never truely creates what you
give it.
I know that the innerHTML is the problem as I have successfully
narrowed down the leak to that line. It only leaks memory when I assign
content to the innerHTML of my containing DIV. Appending a text node,
for example, with the exact same information to the same div does not
leak. Note I have also tried using such existing AJAX packages like
Prototype etc. but to no avail.
I need to do it this way as my XML documents are styled using an XSL
stylesheet and then transformed using transformNode [I will omit
details regarding firefox as there is no problem there]. I have looked
into transformNodeToObject as a way to get a dom object that I
originally assumed could be appended [as a child] to my containing
element. This did not work and gave me compatibility errors.
I suppose I am either looking for someone who has solved this problem,
or who has an acceptable work around. Or someone to say that it cannot
be solved.

I am using javascript to load and parse a big xml file (around 1 mb) save some values to an array and draw a picture using google Flot. Unfortunately, this causes the browser to crash! Is there a way to clear the memory of the browser?

I am developing a simple image editor in an HTA (for a special use-case). Because it is an HTA, it runs in IE only (IE7 to be precise).
Everything is working great so far, however, because I am loading the same img src file over after every edit, I had to attach " + Math.random();" to the image src so that the updated image is displayed.
This has lead to some pretty severe memory issues, as each time I make an edit, it caches another image. Under normal operation, my app uses under 20MB with a single image loaded, however after every edit it adds about 3MB. After a few minutes of testing I have had it consuming over 200MB!
Is there another way to use the same file name, same image src, etc, but have the browser re-read the file before displaying it again rather than using a cached copy.
Alternately, is there a way to make the browser forget about the other copies it has in memory to keep memory usage under control.

I'm writing a very complex javascript application and I'd like memory usage to be as low as possible, so I've got a question about objects.
I'm using jQuery and my code is a bunch of jQuery plugins that interact with eachother. Will there be a difference in memory usage if I declare functions like this:
I haven't written anything in javascript as complex as I'm about to write, so I never worked with objects. As far as I understand, $.fn.whatever will add function to prototype, while $.whatever will add function only to one entry of jQuery object.
So question comes down to this: when jQuery object is being created, are functions in it being copied (meaning increase in memory usage) or does javascript only make references (meaning no significant increase in memory usage) to one main entry of that function in prototype?

However the problem is that once the tabs/iframes are removed the browser does not release the memory. This happens both in IE8 and FireFox. So over a period of time the memory consumed by the browsers are huge because of the creation and deletion of new tabs/iframes and the application slows down. Is there a way to make the browser release memory when an iframe is removed.

Do the latest browsers still need this? I could find an article about IE8 which states that its garbage collection has improved so circular references shouldn't be a big problem any more.Reason for asking is that I maintain an JavaScript / AJAX framework and we are currently optimizing our code which contains a lot of code to remove references from and to the DOM and to remove event listeners.

I was trying to "pin" a menubar to the top of a site. It should allways stay on its absolute position. Especially when the user scrolls the page...
I did like this:

I'm trying to access the source of an HTML page with as few alterations
from the actual source (as in, that seen from the View Source option)
as I can. The method document.documentElement.innerHTML returns the
HTML source, but adds HEAD and other elements if they are absent from
the source, and takes out whitespace (i.e., line feeds, carriage
returns and tabs) within tags and between tags. The follow function:

doesn't add or alter any tags that are absent in the source, and does

all non-line-feed whitespace within tags and all whitespace in general
between tags.
It seems that preserving whitespace is all that I need, but I haven't
found a way to do that through my searches. So is there any way to get
the unaltered HTML source of a page without innerHTML or applets, like
a better version of the XMLHttpRequest object's responseText method?

I am using a pre-built javascript DatePicker. It uses window.open to display
the Calendar and works fine if the user clicks on a link for a specific
date. The proper textbox in the parent window form is populated and the
DatePicker closes.
The problem is when a user clicks on the parent window, the datepicker is
hidden behind the parent window. Beleieve it or not, this creates a real
problem for many users.
Is there any way to put up an alert to the user and then set focus back to
the datepicker if the user clicks on the parent window by mistake?
In the datepicker.js there is a reference to the window created:
ggwindow = window.open(..parameters)
So I tried something like ggwindow.onblur=dont_close_me() referring to a
function that displays an Alert and then sets focus back to the datepicker
window. I know that onblur is an event and not a property or method of the
Window object, but I have also seen mentioned that the onblur event can be
applied to the Window object.
During window creation I don't see a way to set the onblur event for the
created window.

Ok first the bad, it will not work from a stylesheet, you have to use style="display:none" all over the place, I will try to fix that without adding more than 2 lines to the script somehow, I hope. you can not have line breaks in the innerHtml statements in your links(I think that's normal anyway). javascript:void(0); will not work for an iframe, you have to use #(or #null to keep from clicking up to the top of the page) for the hrefs, I don't know if that is a bad thing or not, there has to be something better than both of those options. now the good, if you do not have access to the head of a page, everything works from the body of a page. it is good for making ul/ol tags for a vertical menu without that complicated scripting having to differentiate ul/ol text and li links in those scripts for just a simple menu, the ecmascriptmenu is the only one that makes sense to me, hope he gets his server fixed. the script seems to work with or without a doctype in IE6 firefox and safari. people always wonder why I try to make these type of scripts, I usually maintain long lists of links so I like to provide small previews(iframes that do not load until clicked) for each link, the best part is that IE firefox and safari react to it flawlessly unlike most other types of scripting, one script had an eval statement that gave me tons of trouble taking it out and the other script I took out a server sql proprietary call to a rowid for a table and made almost any html element be a target(a p tag for instance).

i have developed an application that allows users to post code on their profile on various social networks, and activate the application by submitting data via an html form from within their profile. the application works fine.the form action is processed on my server the problem is that after they submit the form, the users are directed to my website and the display of the results are presented on my website - at hxxp/xxxxxxxx.com/process.php.
i am trying to keep the users on their profile on their social network. i tried unsuccessfully using targret="_self" and target="_blank" as part of the code they are posting on their profile I am trying to figure out a way that they will not be directed back to my website.
