What is desired is to be able to have this portlet access a stored text file (file can be edited so content is subject to change) that will have all the information needed for these announcements. Oct 25, 2011I am pretty new to jQuery, so apologies for such a basic question. But, it seems to me, the DOM is a hierarchical data set, and jQuery runs up and down this set in order render many of its results.I would like to understand, therefore, what method(s) jQuery uses to traverse the DOM. Is it using some form of indexing - a radix tree maybe?Developing the thought, I am wondering if there are any caching or optimisation steps I could take to help it along.I ask because a) I am always curious about these things b) I would like to write the best code I can based upon as much information as I can get and c) I am starting to use Ajax and, it seems to me, that the sequence and timing of asynchronous requests needs to be carefully thought through. If requests to the DOM can ever conflict (logically or otherwise) with requests to a server, I would like to understand how it all works.

The value 1136 is a counter and changes permanantly. In VB I can write a
routine which prints the actual value to a fule called COUNTER.TXT.

The first two fields obviously contain text data, and the last is a file upload field.I can get the values of the first two fields in JavaScript easily by using:

var surname = document.getElementById("forename").value;
But I don't have a clue how to get the contents of the file uploaded.
If I use:

var myfile = document.getElementById("myfile").value;
That simply returns the filename of the file, but I want the actual data in the file!Now I realise that the data probably isn't even accessed from the users hd until the form is submitted properly and sent to a server-side script (which I'm not doing), so I probably need a hackish method to make the browser send the contents to the JS function rather than as an extra 'package' to the server.
