JQuery :: Position Transparent Layer And Mouse Events [Opera]?
Nov 18, 2011
I have a div with opacity 0.44 and a picture inside it. When i activate mouse events, this picture (with position absolute ) floats to top. This effect is seen only in Opera. Is there a workaround for this?

Please do not take this the wrong way, but rather as a genuine question I have. I do not want to be negative, but the answer to our bug reporthttp[URL]... One of the main reasons we turned to a javascript framework (we used to use prototype before we - migrated to jQuery), is that we wouldn't need to worry about browsers and versions our users use.[URL].. I now notice that I can not rely on jQuery framework for making functions work cross-browser.
In my opinion, if there is an issue with this, shouldn't jQuery intercept and wrap the call to something that does work in Webkit? Again - this is not meant to be negative, but as an end-developer, I think I should be able to rely on same behaviour of all methods provided in the jQuery library, regardless of what browser/version is being used. (or perhaps at least document it in the api docs?)

I have an image on a web page within a css layer:
<DIV ID=MyLayer
STYLE = "position: absolute;top:68px; left:563px;
width:640px;height:480px;">
<IMG src="ReportImageBox_12.54.52.png" width=640 height=480></IMG>
</DIV>
I need that the parts of this layer which have a certain color
(for instance "white") be rendered transparent.
My question. Is it possible to have a simple javascript function
to incorporate in the web page which does this?

Javascript:
var Element = document.getElementById('box');
alert(Element.style.left);
CSS

left:150px;
top:150px;
background-color:blue;

I need some help on how to reposition a layer depending on the position of an image? I know this should be somewhere in the forum, but I searched without success.
I mean like this:
<body onload="movemylayer()">
<img src="1.gif" id="myimage">
<div id="mylayer"></div>
</body>
...And when the page is loaded the layer moves infront of the image.

I am trying to make a layer that mimics a particular cell in a table (please dont ask me why, its complicated). I have created the layer so that its dimensions exactly match the table cell in question. Now I want to create a function that sets the top and left position of the layer to exactly match the top and left position of the cell in question. I have already had a try myself, but for the life of me can't quite figure it out.
I tried giving the cell in question and 'id' tag (id="centerCol") and then referencing the left and top values of the object. See the following code:
document.getElementById('layerHeader').style.left = document.getElementById('centerCol').style.left;
Any suggestions on what I am doing wrong?

I have found what seems to be a bug. When you have a keydown, keypress and keyup event handler on a text box in Opera, it won't call the keyup handler when you hit the down arrow key. Every other key, including up arrow, seems to work fine.
To make sure it wasn't just me, I tried this in Opera with one of Mike's demos:
http://cross-browser.com/x/examples/key_events.php
If you use the arrow keys while any object other than a textbox has focus, keydown, keypress and keyup show 40 and 38 for down and up arrow, respectively. However, if you focus on one of the textboxes, 40 only shows up for keydown and keypress, not keyup. 38, however, continues to show up for all events.

I would like to display a small html file in a layer (div) when the
mouse goes over a link (<a href="small.html"
onMouseOver="showPop(small.html)").
Which tag should I use in the layer :
<div id="pop"><object data="small.html"></object></div>
OR
<div id="pop"><iframe src="small.html"></iframe></div>
Or maybe is there another solution ?
--of course the file small.html will be different for each link on the
page, that's the job of the showPop() function--
I want my site to be visible by as most browsers/platform as possible.

I've spent the last few hours trying to make the jump from prototype to jquery. I'm trying to use jQuery's crossbrowser event handling but I can't seem to register the event. I've tried lots of combinations and permutations that I've seen on the web but nothing seems to be working so I must be missing something.
$(document).ready(function() {
$(document).mousedown(makeDomPath);
});
function makeDomPath(e)
[Code]....
and none of them fired. The goal here is to have a single event handler that catches all the mousedown events in the page.

I am hoping you can help me. I am finding this problem rather complex to solve. I need to be able to find the surrounding text at the mouse position. For example, if a user clicks on a word in a paragraph, I need to programmatically know what the text is surrounding the click point. The text in question is not just content text, but DOM elements read in as text rather than the DOM element itself. For example, if a user clicks at the word "This" in the following:
<table><tr><td>This is good</td></tr> then I would like to know how to get the text "<td>" just before the "This" as text, not as a DOM element. Furthermore, how can I "enlargen" the scope of my capture, such that I can programmatically get the "<table><tr><td>" part as well as the "is good</td></tr>" part?

I tried to create a mouse over effect using jquery. When user hovers #box1_trigger link, the #service_box1 div should change it's background position. The code I created is the following it's not working for some reason.
html:
<div class="service_box box1" id="service_box1">
<a href="#" id="box1_trigger">
<h3> </h3>
<p> </p>
</a>
</div>
javascript:
<script type="text/javascript">
$(document).ready(function() {
$("#box1_trigger").hover(
function() {
$("#service_box1").stop().animate({backgroundPosition:"(0 -250px)"}, "slow");
},
function() {
$("#service_box1").stop().animate({backgroundPosition: "0 0"}, "slow");
}
);
});
</script>
css:
#service_box1{
width:318px; height:282px;
float:left;
background:url(images/services_panel.png) 0 0 no-repeat;
}
a#box1_trigger{
width:100%; height:100%;
float:left;
display:block;

I am using mouse x,y onclick in one div (if mouse is in one set of coordinate range) to determine whether or not to show/hide another div, and am stumped as to how to compensate for the user changing page size, as the coordinates change. Is there an absolute xy, regardless of page/text size, or code to compensate for it? What is going on here is I have flash that I have no control over (wix) and I need to show Html (which wix doesn't), so I am having to determine if the user is over a certain button in the swf which I put in a div to give me some control over the flash. I'm using on click to bring the HTML to the front in a certain position, while the flash does its animation thing.
