JQuery :: Animate:scrollTop Blocked By Overflow:hidden In Chrome?

Dec 4, 2010

I've been trying to implement a smooth scrolling animation in my page, which works fine in firefox and IE8 (haven't tested any older versions yet). But doesn't seem to work in google chrome (and probably safari either I guess). I have 4 divs on my page, positioned absolutely 2 by 2, only one div should be visible at a time, so the body has gotten an overflow:hidden. When an anchor-link to one of those divs is clicked the javascript gets its position, then scrolls towards it. etting the position works, but the scrolling does not work in chrome.

Now, when I remove 'overflow: hidden' from the body element, the scrolling does work in chrome, but of course adds the scrollbars which I don't want.

Removinng Overflow-y Hidden/setting Overflow-y Visible?

Nov 12, 2010

I'm currently building a website that has a flash fullscreen popup at the beginning. The flash popup loads fullscreen, therefor I've set overflow-y to hidden. As soon as the flash popup is done, it removes the div it the flash is in using javascript, but I can't figure out how to put the overflow-y to visible.

I'm assuming I need to build a Javascript function to show overflow-y visible, and then need to call to that function from the flash file. I just can't figure out how to build the javascript function since I suck at javascript.

All the CSS is in the original file, so not in an external stylesheet, this needs to stay that way because I have to implement the code in to several different web sites.

JQuery :: Animate With ScrollTop Does Not Work In IE

Feb 15, 2011

I am migrating a site from prototype/scriptaculous to jQuery, and I am encountering a lot of problems with animations in IE. I should start by asking that in scriptaculous, none of these animations require special CSS or tricks for IE (like getting rid of position absolute or anything like that), but this seems to be the case for almost every animation I do in jQuery - is there a list somewhere of all the little hacks and tricks people need to do to get these animations to work in IE? I have re-implemented a few hundred of these animations (mostly crossfades, sliding up and down, highlights), and not a single one worked in IE with the original CSS from the scriptaculous version (in most cases, the other browsers would). In most cases this has to do with absolute positioning. Is it possible jQuery 1.4.4 (the version I am working with) just has massive problems or something because my impression was this library was supposed to be easier to work with, not inordinately more difficult... I just find it hard to believe everyone else is having this many issues with it.

In any event, one thing I can't find any fix for anywhere, is animating the scrollTop of an element (NOT the whole page, which seems to be what everyone else wants to do). I have a div with overflow:hidden, and two buttons underneath which allow the user to scroll through the div (a real scrollbar in this context would not look good or be very useful in comparison).

I ported the code over from scriptaculous, and it works just fine in all normal browsers. Here is the version that would animate scrolling up:

Tested in Firefox/Chrome/Safari just fine right off the bat. But in IE, it just waits and then calls my callback, setting the scrollTop correctly at the end but not actually animating. It's not totally failing, in the sense that the scrolling does happen, and the callback does fire, but it should animate, and I don't really see any reason why it wouldn't. I have set position on the div and all wrapping divs to relative, and static, and set the display value, set the zoom value, widths, heights, everything, but this div will not animate as it scrolls at all in IE only (this is all IE's - 6, 7, and 8). I also tried isolating the div on its own page, removing nearly all the content (leaving text so it will have something to scroll through), practically no CSS outside of width, height, and overflow, and again - does not work in IE only (works in all other browsers without fail).

How Would I Discover The Text In A Block Element Hidden By Overflow:hidden Style Being Set?

Sep 20, 2005

Specifically, assume I have a div tag of absolute dimensions. I need
to figure out, first, whether or not the text inside the div tag is
partially hidden by the overflow setting, and if so, what the hidden
text is.

Is this even possible? Obviously, the rendering engine in the browser
"knows" this information, but is it accessible through Javascript?

IE7 Ignores 'overflow:hidden' When Moving Element

Dec 2, 2009

In the top right of the page is a JavaScript (Prototype) Carousel that scrolls through images when you click the arrows. It works properly in all browsers except IE 6 & 7 (it does work properly in IE 8) with my primary concern being IE 7. When you click on the right arrow to scroll to the next image it scrolls properly but the entire strip of images is displayed and it sites on top of the page's content.I've tried all of the overflow:hidden hacks I could find so.

Setting DocumentElement.style.overflow = 'hidden' Jolts To Top Of Page?

Mar 2, 2011

I have a pop-up window system on my site that shows an absolutely-positioned div over the entire page as a "pop up" of sorts when someone clicks a link. I use this simple line of Javascript to disable page scrolling when a "pop up" box is opened by a user:

document.documentElement.style.overflow = document.body.style.overflow = 'hidden';

The problem is that when a user is scrolled down on a page and clicks a link to bring up one of my pop up boxes, when the overflow is set to 'hidden' to disable scrolling, the page "jolts" back up to the top (similar as to what would happen if someone clicked an <a> element with href="#" ). However, the links are not actually links, but span tags that are programmed with JS to trigger the scrollbar to be disabled when clicked, so that is not the culprit here. I've narrowed the problem down to that one line of code which I posted earlier. Apparently, setting the documentElement overflow style to 'hidden' scrolls the user to the top of the page automatically along with "disabling" the scroll bar on the page.

I am wondering if there is a way to prevent this jolting to the top of the page each time that JS code is triggered. I don't want users to have to scroll back down to where they were each time they open a pop up dialogue box on my site, as this would be detrimental for usability purposes.

JQuery :: Animate() & Google Chrome - Call Goes To The Element Which Lost The Focus, With An Opacity Value Of 0.2?

Mar 18, 2010

I recently wrote some code, which involves a list. Elements can be picked by up/down arrow keys.To highlight the elements, I'm using a similar call to objects[focus]stop (true, true).animate({'opacity': 1}, 200);(As you can see, all DOM elements are cached)the same call goes to the element which lost the focus, with an opacity value of 0.2.Whatsoever, I noticed on testing that the performance is just fine on firefox 2/3, IE 7/8, even Safari has good results.Only exception so far is Chrome, it's terribly slow on those calls with a CPU load of 40-50%.I didn't further investigate that behavior since it still works "OK" on Chrome, but SIGNIFICANT slower.

Hidden Input Taking No Value In Chrome And Safari (Windows)

I have a web app which allows users to select multiple items from a select tag. I then call a JS function on submit which collects all the options they've selected and then adds them to the value attribute of a hidden input. The options selected are then used at a later time. This works fine on IE and Firefox, but both Chrome and Safari for not adding the selected values to the value attribute of the hidden input. Are there any JS issues for Chrome and Safari that could be responsible for this?
