Inserting Dynamic JS File Into Script Source - Chrome Error
Apr 10, 2011
I'm trying to insert a dynamic js file which contains multiple functions in it (for the example : function x, function y) and it seems that my google chrome doesn't really like it so much. Is there anyway you know I can bypass it and make it work and both web browsers.
Code examples:
// this is where the js file supposed to go
<script id="ScriptFile">
</script>
//1.js contains function x and function y
document.getElementById('ScriptFile').src = "/Mysite/js/1.js"
Later on I need to preform some actions with function x & y. Couple more issues I need to explain first there are number of js files (1,2,3 .... n ). Which all contain the same functions but with same data so i cant register them hard-coded. If I type the function x into the "ScriptFile" block, it does work.. its not the function problem. Same goes if i include it as source in the "ScriptFile" block (<script id="ScriptFile" src="/Mysite/js/1.js") this only gives me an error while using chrome, works perfectly fine under explorer the error says it cant find function x.

Can I control the src attribute of a header <script> tag so that it loads a different script file depending on the value of a variable?
I have a javascript file that currently holds the variables for several countries and weihgts too much for a single file. I estimate that only 2-3kb of the 40+ that it now holds are used at any given point depending on the user's chosen country.
Now, I can split the file into several smaller files to reduce loading time but only if I have a way of dynamically loading the different files.

I'm trying to create a dynamic form, and for the most part it's working out fine.I'm using javascript with onclick and onchange on checkboxes and select boxes to change the form as the user makes selections.However, there's a few issues I'm running into that are giving me problems.
One is that when the user reloads the page, all of the javascript inserted or removed form elements are reset, but the choices on the checkboxes and select boxes aren't, which looks very strange to the user. How can I avoid this? I'm currently including scripts tags in the body of the html, but this is pretty messy and hard to manage. Is there a better way? Second is that I'd like to be able to insert javascript function declarations into text that is dynamically inserted by javascript.However, when I do so, the browser does not recognize the functions. The reason I'd like to do so is that I am using Ruby on Rails, and would like to be able to keep the scripts in the partials to which they relate. I have to use inline javascript, because the scripts are having element ids inserted based on Ruby variables. Is this a lost cause, or is there a technique that enables dynamically inserted javascript to be loaded?
Lastly, my dynamic form's javascript shows or hides portions based on what it encounters while loading. The main reason is that I want to show the whole form for users without javascript, and then hide advanced or obscure details unless they are activated with a checkbox on the form for users with javascript. However, this is creating a jarring pop-in effect, where on first load, the pre-javascript formatted page is shown for a split second, and then the javascript kicks in and fixes everything and the page visibly jumps and changes. Is there a way to avoid this to create a more polished effect?

Does anybody encountered this problem ? My purpose is to change the source of a flash object from param_src = window.location.search.substring(1)
so the essential code is something like this:
command = '<object ... src="' + param_src + '" ... TYPE="application/x-shockwave-flash" ...</object>'
document.write(command);
This works on FIREFOX but IE keeps playing the same file instead of playing a new one !
I have tried to add the no-cache meta-tags in the header but it still doesn't work.

I'm giving away a freebie on my blog for other people to use on their blogs. It's an add-on thingy that allows their readers to share their blog posts on social networks like Twitter, etc.Since I doubt the people who will be using this freebie are experts when it comes to HTML, I don't want to dump a lot of code on them. I want to give it to them in just a few lines of code.An external JS file works great for this... well, sort of. Basically, this is how the add-on is supposed to work.
My JS file is going to create a bunch of divs, spans, links, and all that lovely stuff, and give them some classes and styling. Then, there's going to be another script (not my own) that I'll be giving away along with my JS script. This script is an AddThis script (AddThis, if you didn't know, is a sharing and bookmarking service used on many sites). This AddThis script basically takes the HTML elements I created in my script (which it can identify by the classes I defined), and make them clickable, and do stuff that I don't want to bother to make them do myself. In other words, it makes my job MUCH easier, in addition to giving the person using my freebie the ability to see who is sharing their blog posts.
creating all these HTML elements was the use innerHTML(). But the problem is that while my script loads fine, the AddThis script doesn't add the classes that it's supposed to. The AddThis script does load, and I've checked my script for errors and I don't see any, so I assume for some reason AddThis is unable to add the classes. So, I tried createElement(). Same exact elements being created, but I get the same problem I have with innerHTML().So, I tried document.write() and everything worked exactly as it's supposed to, which is great, but I know how evil everyone says document.write is, and the last thing I want to do is be evil, LOL.
I think I've tried everything now, even a normal HTML page in an iframe, but that doesn't work because the AddThis script gets the URL of the current page so it can use it for sharing the blog post (like in a tweet), and I don't want the source of the iframe as the URL!
I would like to know how I can make either innerHTML() or createElement() work for this script, and if it's impossible, maybe you can at least tell me WHY it's not working. For me, there's nothing worse than not knowing why something isn't working!

I am writing a code to show the user, what data he had entered in ckeditor as rich text but after entering the text while the source is created for it, it is splitting from on line text to multiline text. So javascript is giving a script error. Is there any solution to retain the text in to single line..even if it is entered in multiline??

My problem is that obj.name, or any of its derivatives do not seem to work in FF and Chrome, but work fine in IE. The variable obj stems from
Code:
function catchIt(e) {
if (editing) return;
if (!document.getElementById || !document.createElement) return;
if (!e) var obj = window.event.srcElement;
else var obj = e.target;
How come obj.name becomes undefined when i alert it? What can be changed to accommodate the script for FF and Chrome as well? The rest of the code:

We have a fairly large (1500 line) .js file that contains script that most of our pages use. My personal opinion is that this is not easy to maintain, but others are concerned that with the script placed in separate smaller files the web server will have to process several other requests for script files, which will impact the performance of the server. Is that concern well placed? If so, is there some other way to break up a large script source file to make it easier to
maintain?

I am developing a web page . For this i am using Javascript embedded in html. In the application ,the user can input data via interfaces in the page which is chosen and read from a master xml file , the chosen data then needs to be stored and saved in a xml file.I have designed the web page in FrontPage.
Now the problem i face is while trying to save the output xml file i get error Permission Denied , error code 0 . This happens when i try to open the page in browser IE 6.0 SP2.I am using DOM parser methods for doing the xml manipulations/savings etc.urprisingly this works in another machine.Also can i use the all of the same javascript code if i want to run it in an IIS. Do i have to do some changes to make it server side javascript code.

I wrote some JavaScript I misguidedly thought cool, and felt like sharing it with the world. So I put a link to the source file in my blog. If I click on the link in Mozilla, it shows the source as text, as intended. If I click on it in Internet Explorer, I get a choice between saving the file or opening it, where 'opening it' means 'trying to run it and getting an error.' Putting Code:
type="text/plain" in the a tag doesn't help. Does anything?

I am using a script called ajax_load.js that defines a function, ajaxpage(), that allows a person to load the contents of an external page into a div item. I have it setup so I may use ajaxpage() to load pages with other div items in it. The problem is that I cannot reference the div items loaded by ajaxpage(). I have provided an example below to illustrate this. It was working fine in the prior version of Google Chrome and is still working fine in IE 8, IE 7, and Firefox. The version of Chrome I am currently using is 4.0.249.78
Here is the example; All the files used in this example are listed below:
74.54.95.210/~admin/js_test/ajaxtest.html
74.54.95.210/~admin/js_test/ajax_load.js
74.54.95.210/~admin/js_test/ajaxtest_external.html
74.54.95.210/~admin/js_test/blank.png
[Code]...
This code was working just fine in the prior stable version of chrome, and still works properly in IE 8, IE 7, and Firefox without any errors (The version of chrome giving me problems is 4.0.249.78). Does anyone know how to go about fixing this? Is this something wrong with the latest version of chrome, or is this on my end? The site I am currently working on relies heavily on this working, and having to change things means altering several thousand lines of code.

If you select a Training Event from the menu - "Submit This Record" will appear - click on it. Three alerts should come up - the first two showing data elements (normally not there but I needed to replace some code for this demonstration as the "real" page interacts with my live database), and the last saying "data submitted". In Safari, Firefox and Chrome these all work fine but in IE8 (Explorer) it gives an error on page error ...
If you click on the Volunteer Events radio button, an alert show ups that shows some more data elements (again normally not there), then select a Volunteer Event from the drop down list, make selections from any drop down lists that then appear after that until finally several other form items appear. You must enter a date, and at least one entry from the "Volunteer Activity Itemized Times" drop down menus before you click on "Submit This Record" - the same three alerts should come up - and like the Training Event, everything works except on IE8. (could be that this is also a problem in versions lower than IE8 but I don't have access to a machine that runs Windows (I am a MAC user).So if anyone out there is running IE8, I would appreciate if you could put this app thru it's paces and when you get the error - shed some light as to what is not right in the Explorer world that the rest of the world is OK with

I'm new to js/jquery and this forum so please forgive my potentially off-scope js/jquery remarks. I've been running a lot of toggles to show, hide, etc... divs and other HTML elements. It's making my application incredibly nice navigation wise.
Now to put myself in my users shoes. Say one user toggles on and off the things they want and don't want until they are satisfied with all the content of the screen. (That is by the way the nature of my application. A user loads in various variables via PHP and other means and when satisfied, a PDF is generated for them containing all their preferred content.)
Because: When a user is at a point where all the content they are viewing is worthy of a PDF, it is also worth saving that HTML 'view' (classes switched, variable adjusted, etc...). I would call it 'Save this workspace' or something along those lines.
I don't have a direct question per se but am more interested in the views of others who have similar thoughts and moreover, what relationship has jQuery had in helping employing some method?
