View 1 RepliesI work for masterclock. We sell network synced clocks and timing systems. One of our products is a "bell ringer." We currently control this ringer through a C++ program another one of our employees made. However, it only works on Windows systems, looks like crap, and is as confusing beyond all get-out. I have been given the task of rewriting this program in a pretty, easy, and universal format. i.e. a browser. Now to further explain the bell system program.
1. The program searches the local network for the bell system hardware.
2. User chooses appropriate hardware (if more than one bell system exists) to connect to and enters the password.
3. User edits tables stored in a local MS Access database via the bell system program UI.
4. User sends data to the bell system hardware it is connected to.
I've been racking my brain and the internet for about 6 hours trying to see what is possible. Because this all needs to be done locally I can't use any sort of server-side language like php or asp. It seems silly to make a client install a virtual server to connect to a file that is on their own computer. I'm assuming that I am pretty much limited me to javascript. I found this site but that only works with internet explorer which is almost as restricting as the program we have now.
I considered flash for a little while until I found out a swf can't connect to a database w/o using php or asp. We aren't limited to the MS Access database but it would be less work for me if we could stick with it. It may not even be possible but it seems like it should work. some way. We also considered an internal site on the bell ringer hardware itself, like routers nowadays. I think that would be an equally if not more difficult process though and I'm limited to about 500kb on its flash memory.
I am attempting to create an Access database connection from within an HTML page. I am using Javascript to make the connection and then test a basic UPDATE statement.

This script is trying to talk (ajax) to the server that it comes from but I'm getting "Access Denied" errors. I'm well aware that cross-domain calls are not allowed for security reasons so my question is how does Google Analytics work because essentially thats what I'm trying to accomplish. I can embed a Google Analytics script into my website and it'll gather data and send it back to Google.

One solution would be to convert all of the relative links to absolute links. I can convert the html source file anyway I wish, but ideally I would like to modify the html source as little as possible, for example insert a function that modifies the result of the src attribute. How would I go about this? Is there any trick I can use to define where the relative home is? Am I going to get into any scripting security gotchas?

I am currently working on a static website for an auto parts company.
I've spent quite a long time with the owner of the business in
developing a javascript version of a windows explorer type of
navigation to be able to find these parts.
I was just notified that the individual that wants this done also does
not want the external .js file to be able to be copied, and someone
else profit from his/our work. I know that you cannot hide a client
side file; no matter how hard you try someone can get it. However, if
I deciped to go with a database instead, could I use a variant of this
file or convert it to another type that will allow me to use an access
dbase that we have, and yet keep my navigation the way I programmed
it?

I had a programmer develop a website who refuses to add a logical function to which I am going to have to do myself now.
When you delete an image or file on a page of a website, it does not delete it from the server. It just deletes it from the website and database only and I can see how this will eventually cause problems when files accumilate in the server.
Can someone give me some samples, direction or instructions how I would implement a function so that when the admin deletes the image on a website, it also deletes it from the server itself.

I've managed to read from a local database using only javascript and the DAO
ActiveX object, but I can't make it work with a remote database. When I
change the connection string from "C:..." to "http://..." it doesn't work
any more. Any suggestion?

I have been working on a website for fun/practice. I have been looking into web cam/audio support. However, I am trying to avoid Flash/SilverLight/or any other form of plug-ins.
After researching over the past few days I have found a couple of vague clues. According to my findings it may be possible to access video input (web cam) and audio input (microphone) via usage of Javascript with no need for Flash or plug ins.
I have been attempting to find further information but haven't been successful.
I come here to ask if anyone knows if this is indeed possible or if I have read false information.
Since the client user has no totally installed flash player in their computer, so that No need to detect if they have installed flash player. I try to create an alert and I found out that it�s impossible to put a link in the alert. Now I remove the flash installer in my computer, so that the flash in my webpage become a box. I want to happen when they open my webpage that contains a flash; an alert or message on the top was appearing saying that �You do not have flash installed in your computer. For some reason it says access denied. I copy this code from that website. But can't find any code wrong.
I have a website with no ssi, php, cgi...nothing. Plain old flat pages are all it serves.
I need to upload a list to it - a big, plain text list in html. A 2Mb list!
With gzip compress, it comes down to 91Kb, much more modem-friendly!
After about 30 minutes of googling, I haven't yet found a way of serving this page up like this.
I can't send headers as no php or .htaccess is allowed.
And please don't suggest I move to a "proper" web host! It's for a friend with a one-off need for a small website for about 2 months, and the freebie 10Mb is fine.
I am currently developing a page which allows access to music on a server. This music is being streamed, but users are also able to download this music (assuming they have the license to do so). All of the music uploaded is of the .mp3 format, however they have no filetype extensions, and were not named using any particular naming convention. Because of this, I was hoping to change the filename (when a downloaded is initiated) to variables I have stored based on the current song.
I am currently simply opening a new page, in Chrome is looks like this: chrome.tabs.create({ "url": song.url })
Hit presents the user with a prompt to save the file, however, its default name is a random alphanumeric string with no extension, as per their file name on my server. Is there an easy way to do this without renaming all the music server side? I do have the variables song.title and song.artist setup!
Edit: Since this page is only for Chrome users, I listed the code I am using. I understand window.open and was originally using this. It functions the same, and if I need to revert back to using is instead, I shall.
I'm very new to jQuery and registered a new account on the website yesterday. I can log in using my account details OK, but when I try to use the Plugins section of the site I get :- Access denied You are not authorized to access this page.
If I try to search for a pluging, I get

I am trying to create a web page in which the contents of one selection list
depends upon which element in another selection list is chosen, but where
the information to populate the first selection list comves from an SQL
database on the web server.
There are a couple of these situations in my application but, for example,
the first list might be a list of counties, and the second list a list of
states/provinces. Obviously the names of counties depend upon which
state/province is chosen, but there are too many possibilities to be able to
embed them within the web page itself. So when the user selects a
state/province I need to go to the server to ask for the list of counties.
I have seen a number of posts that sort of address this issue. For example
it is suggested to use <script src="a URL"/> to ask the server side code to
send up data of type "text/javascript". However the examples do not seem to
address how the server side code would know which state/province the user
had selected.
If there is a web site that addresses this sort of thing, I would appreciate
any pointers.
