IE Bug: Onchange Event Not Called When Using <optgroup> In Select Drop-down
Jul 20, 2005
In a <select> drop-down, the onchange event isn't called when
scrolling through the dropdown using the mouse-wheel and when crossing
over a new <optgroup>.
Using the example below, notice how the onchange event isn't called
when mouse wheel scrolling between A3 and B1, but it works properly
when scrolling between A1 and A2.
E.g.
------------------------------------------
<html>
<body onload="document.forms['myForm'].elements['mySelect'].focus()">
<form name="myForm" id="myForm">
<select onchange="alert('onchange event');" name="mySelect"
id="mySelect">
<optgroup label="Group A">
<option value="A1">A1</option>
<option value="A2">A2</option>
<option value="A3">A3</option>
</optgroup>
<optgroup label="Group B">
<option value="B1">B1</option>
<option value="B2">B2</option>
<option value="B3">B3</option>
</optgroup>
<optgroup label="Group C">
<option value="C1">C1</option>
<option value="C2">C2</option>
<option value="C3">C3</option>
</optgroup>
</select>
</form>
</body>
</html>

i am quite frustrated with this. I have a dropdown with the values populating from database. Now when the user select "New" from the drop down, a new textfield should be seen which is in other case hidden. The code is working absolutely fine with firefox but its not at all working with IE. What could be the problem? What do i have to do extra for making it work.
Code in Head Tag
<script language ="javascript">
function abc()
{
if(document.form1.select1.value=="New")

I have made a drop-down list on my html form using <select> tag. I am using a onchange event for this select tag. My problem is that the onchange event triggers only when I use the mouse to change the value to drop-down list. When I use tab key to focus on the list and then change the value using up-down keys, the onchange event does not get triggered.

I have a select dropdown which has two events an onchange and onkeypress.
My problem now is when I use the keyboard arrows to select an item from the list in a select drop down the onchange is selected(invoked) before I even reach the second item in the list when using opera and IE but working fine with Firefox and chrome.The onblur event does not work either because the focus must be set to following tag

I have more than once wanted to manipulate the contents of select boxes
dynamically, whilst the boxes contain <optgroup> tags.
Manipulation of a select box containing only <option> tags is fairly
easy and there is plenty of material on the net to assist with this.
However, I have searched long and found the material on the subject of
<optgroup> to be sparse, with a few posts here & there, but basically
you're on your own.
After much trial & error regarding techniques for this, I have a fairly
generic solution, which I decided to share, and the code is below. Two
different scenarios I have come across are (1) altering the contents of
one <select> dynamically depending upon another, and (2) being able
click 'up' and 'down' buttons to alter the sequence of the listing
(whilst keeping each <option> within its respective <optgroup>) I tried
various solutions for both of these which tended to either trash the
screen, alter which <optgroup> an <option> was under or trash the
<optgroup>s altogether.
Both these situations can be handled with the solution here. Basically
I keep the <optgroup>s and <option>s stored in an Array(), and then use
the Array() to reconstruct the <select>.
To use, just manipulate the Array() in memory - which I find very easy
- and then call the function to reconstruct.
I like to build the <select> <optgroup> <option> set using HTML as
normal and then create the Array() with <body as this makes
it usable where javascript is unavailable, rather than have the Array()
as a hard-coded start point. Code:

For some reason my change() function is only called when the page loads. I'd
much rather it gets called when the select changes.
Here's the code:
window.onload = init;
function init() {
var new_select = new Selector('tdata','myselect','myid');
var new_select_list = new DataSource("some_list");
new_select_list.addItem(1,"One");
new_select_list.addItem(2,"Two");
new_select_list.addItem(3,"Three");
new_select_list.addItem(4,"Four");
new_select_list.addItem(5,"Five");
new_select.setDataSource(new_select_list);
new_select.formInput("form","input");
}
Selector = function(container_id,name,id) {
var container = document.getElementById(container_id);
this.node = document.createElement("select");
//this.node = new Select();
container.appendChild(this.node);
this.node.name = name;
this.node.id = id;
}
Selector.prototype.setDataSource = function(ds) {
this.dataSource = ds;
for(var i = 0; i < ds.items.length; i++) {
if(ds.items[i] != undefined) {
var option = new Option(ds.items[i],i,false,false);
this.node.options[this.node.options.length] = option;
}
}
}
Selector.prototype.formInput = function(form,element) {
var myform = document.getElementById(form);
this.input = document.createElement("input");
this.input.name = element;
//this.input.type = "hidden";
myform.insertBefore(this.input,myform.firstChild);
this.node.onchange = change(this);
}
function change(selector) {
alert("hello");
selector.input.value = selector.node.value;
}
DataSource = function(name) {
this.name = name;
this.items = new Array();
}
DataSource.prototype.addItem = function(id,item) {
this.items[id] = item;
}
and the html:
<html>
<head>
<script defer src="/javascript/selectors.js"
type="text/javascript"></script>
</head>
<body>
<form id=form>
<table border=1>
<tr>
<td>
Select:

<td id=tdata>

</tr>
</table>

I have a table that contains a select element like so
<tr><td>key value in hidden input</td><td><select>options</select></
td></tr>
I need to set
$("selectclass").change(function() {
//Find the value of hidden input in 1st cell of row of the select
list that was changed.
});
So when a user changes the option of the select i need to get the new value the option has been changed to plus the value from the hidden input and submit them via ajax to a method on the server. How can i get the hidden inputs value?

I'm currently facing a weird issue with the onchange event. I have a web application where each blur event makes a call the webserver to store the value of the textfield. I only want to trigger that ajax call when something has changed, so i track the onchange event on each textfield to set a flag if something has changed.
The onchange event always fires to first time when i click outside of a textfield even if i didn't change anything in the field.
I narrowed it down to the following: A prefilled textfield always fires the onchange-event the first time you leave the textfield. An initially empty textfield does not fire the onchange event.
Sample code (IE 8 on Windows 7 computer):
script:

I searched here and some other places on the net but cant find anything that suits my needs. I have a SELECT box with 3 values Code:
<form name="form1">
<select name="length">
<option name="length" value="none">--Select for All--</option>
<option name="length" value="5">--5 Days--</option>
<option name="length" value="7">--7 Days--</option>
<option name="length" value="10">--10 Days--</option>
</select>
</form>
OnChange, I want to invoke a function that auto populates the rest of the SELECT fields in the form. The select boxes will vary in quantity as the page is dynamic, but the values are always the same (like the code above).
Does this make sense?

I modified a particular page in the following way:
I ran an init function on window.onload, which iterated thorugh the checkboxes on the page and assigned an event handler function - let's call it validate() to each checkbox.
I tested it in the big 5 browsers and ran into a strange issue in I.E. only -
let's say there are the following checkboxes code...
When I click on "box1" the function is not called. When check "box2" the function is called but by "box1", when I click on "box3" the function is called by "box2" and so forth...

Somewhere on this forum I found a piece of code, javascript, that was titled something like 'cursor position conversted to css styling'. It's good. I'm learning something. But there's one thing I don't understand. There's a function called 'zxcMse(event)' and it doesn't get called by anything.
But I have a feeling that it is not wasted - something is calling it. Maybe the system knows it is there and it is called by a mouse event. But how does the system know it is there?

Is there anyway to trigger an onChange event without actually clicking etc.
I want to trigger it from a method. It sounds silly but I'm taking some code over from another developer and if I could do this it would save me days of re-writing!!!

This is a follow up with a new question from a post I did last week. [Code]... I have an experimental website where I have music recordings. url removed When you open the site, each page uses a piano keyboard graphic to navigate between pages. If you click on a key that says "Jukebox" it will open a small window and continuously play tunes. The way the jukebox works basically is, when you click the jukebox key it calls an html file which contains the information needed to play the first song. When that song is finished it calls another html file with the information to play the second song and so on. Each html file contains an embedded Windows Media Player in it.
I would like to give visitors the option to use the QuickTime player. So I can have one key in the keyboard graphic that say “Jukebox – for Windows Media Players” and then another key in the graphic that would say “Jukebox – for QuickTime players”. I would like to use both keys to call the same html file. So, in the file I would like to:
1. Determine which key was pressed in the graphic. (how to send a parameter from the keyboard graphic file indicating which key was pressed) 2. With that parameter I would then like to invoke the appropriate player. (how to receive that parameter)

I have a textarea and a DIV as code below. The way it supposes to work is when I focus on the textarea by clicking it, the DIV will show. Otherwise, it will be hidden. Then when I click the DIV, there will be an alert(). However, right now if I click on the DIV, it will trigger the blur() event first which calls to hide() the DIV. After that, the click event is not called at all. I need to be able to click on the DIV and the DIV is not hide() at all and show alert().

I have a drop down box. onChange of that drop down box the option selected is $_POSTed to a php page where I'm grabbing that name and using it in a form on the new page.
Instead of it opening a new window for the php page, I'd love to make it more aesthetically pleasing and use Fancy Box and jQuery to open a popup window over the page that has an iframe of the php in it.
My issue: I can't figure out how to have the modal popup open when the dropdown is selected. I don't want to have to use a button to trigger it. Any way to trigger the popup AND also POST to the php page onChange of the selection box?
