Grabbing ASCII Values In A Text Box

I have a function that lets me convert one character and throw an alert
with the corresponding ASCII value, but what I am having trouble with
is applying it to a text box. What I'm trying to do is when characters
are entered the function will loop through the entered values and throw
an alert for each of the corresponding ASCII values for each of the
characters entered. I am trying to alert the user for every character
that is out of the range of ASCII equivalent 1 - 128. Test code:

Here's what I have so far, which handles characters
as they're typed in. Could someone please show me how I would loop
through all the values that are entered if a block of text was pasted

I've tried innerHTML but to no avail. (Does it have to be wrapped in a container?) Or is innerHTML a replace only?

So now I want to know how I can recognise and grab the text from any random webpage and put it inside of a variable, my script can take it from there.

I am wondering if it is at all possible to create a button that--when
clicked--grabs a paragraph of text that a user has highlighted. So you
go to this website, then highlight a section of text. Once you have
the text selected with you mouse, you then click the button. The
button executes a function which acquires the selected text in a
string. Is this hypothetical situation possible? Thank you for the

Is there a way to grab the text from inside a alt tag?I have a sitethat will have tons of span tags and I need to go through all of themsearching for the alt="" attribute then grab it.I'm using some non-jQuery javascript, so I'm sure there is an easierway to format this than what I currently have.----- html example:

I built my company's website and the content portion of the site uses
text with styles with relative values and the navigational part of the
site uses text with styles with absolute values. The purpose of this
was so that the end user could increase the size of the text on the
webpage and only the content portion of the page would scale or resize
but the navigation would not. This works as expected on a pc but the
entire page scales on a MAC. Does MAC not support text with styles the
same as pc so that the only scalable text is that with relative values
(ie: small, x-small, medium, large, etc)? Absolute values conist of

is there a function to tell me the ordinal value of an ascii character in a string. What I'm trying to do is to find out how a tab character in MS Word gets pasted into the TinyMCE editor. I had no luck finding any tab in the string, so I would like to see what is in that position.

I developing a system using JSP. People familiar with this technology
know that ServerPages are easier to maintain than Servlets, but they
can only have ASCII output.
With that as the backdrop, here's what I want to accomplish. I want
clicking on a link to cause a script to be executed on the server but
-->I don't want the browser to jump to another page<--.
A solution that I conceived was to have javascript like
someimage.src = 'http://myscript'
This will accomplish the task and it would be great if myscript return
an image of a checked checkbox! But, because of JSP limitations this
would need to be an ASCII image.
So my question is twofold:
1. Are there convenient ASCII image formats?
2. Is there another way to accomplish what I want (trigger some action
on the server without jumping to another page and using js to display
a sensible response - something like a check)?

I'm looking for a function that will convert non-ascii characters to unicode escaped string.For example, "あ" => "u3042".A similar piece of code is below. However, it convert strings to "\uxxxx" instead of "uxxxx". Changing "\" to "" in code below still won't work because that result in 'u' + 'xxxx' which print as "uxxxx".I have been searching for a few days already, and start wondering if this is at all possible. ; (

I have a quastion, I am currently passing in a number as a string to my function (this is hard to change since its a program that generates the numbers).
For example i pass the number function random('252'), but what I want is this
function random(252).
So my quastion is, do you guys have a clever idea on how to take this string, this ascii number and convert it to its "real" integer value, so that i can make correct calculations?

Most of these characters are not on the standard keyboard.
Here's a successful contrivance, with comments & cautions,
a little page that works in IE6.

comments: The innerHTML property is needed to produce the
character glyph from the entity code. If the entity string
were passed to innerText(in 1st statement) then the code
would remain literal.
This work-around depends on s1 being rendered before alt()
is called. It will not work as immediately executed code,
because element s1 would not exist yet.
cautions: Trying to style alert's display will produce error
msgs. Do not use <B>, <U>, or <I> tags in the argument
string. No Heading tags either.
Strange enough, an inline STYLE, setting font values, say,
does not give error msg, but will not execute either.
Alert ignores it.
You can use <BR> tags in the argument, which give the same
result as
in a direct arg to alert().
In sum, you can tell alert what characters to display,
in what order, and on what line, but you cannot tell
alert HOW to display them.

I have 4 text boxes that are supposed to load 4 seperate values of data from one field in one table from a database. The field is called interface_cropsettings (from the interface table) and these values have been concatenated and comma seperated in this field.

Once the form is filled out and saved, the data is inserted into the database and the values from these 4 text boxes are concatenated, comma seperated and inserted into that one field correctly.

If the 4 text boxes have the following values:

However, if the form is closed and then re-opened, each text box displays the entire database field rather then each value seperated in the corresponding text box.

I already know why the data appears like this in the form, my problem is that I'm not sure how to write the javascript to seperate the values into the correct corresponding fields, assuming javascript is what I should be using!
Also, this is kind of irrelevant but just in case you're wondering, this form is part of a cold fusion application!

Is there any way via JS to grab the name of the file that its running?
I want an external JS loaded onto a page to enable a function when something is clicked that it passes control over to another page but adds the name of the file that is currently running as one of the URL parameters.
Perhaps there is a clever way to get it off the URL?

I am messing around with Google Maps a little and the fundamental difficulty in building anything useful is extrapolating address information from another website. I would like to be able to use a form like yahoo yellow pages send it a zip code and get back a bunch of, say, banks in that zip code and parse the address out. Some things, very few, actually return data in the XML format, but how do you write a script that send a request to a website and then returns that request as a DOM object. I'll even take HTML and then I'll parse it out myself, but how do you do that.
I know it sounds fundamental, but I'm a real beginner in this, so if you can push me in the right direction I would appreciate it too.

Im trying to grab certain variables like orderID & Subtotal variables that are posted to the confirmation page. The reason im grabbing these is for a confirmation pixel that is displayed for commission junction. When some clicks on their link, then completes an order,heir tracking pixel fires grabs these variables and that way they can track the order confirmaton. The problem is they dont see the tracking pixel firing and its not grabbing the variables. I dont know what to do. Here is the code.This is the code that shows on the confirmation page. I want to create a function with Javascript regular expressions that will grab the entire contents of a custom tag and place that into a string. Including the tag that I am grabbing.
This is what I think the regular expression should look like:
<myTag[^>]*>(.*?)</myTag>
Whats the best way to use Javascript to place the results of my Regular Expression shown above into a string.
For example:
if myString = "bla bla bla <myTag>some more text</myTag>" then I need a command that will use the regular expression to put "<myTag>some more text</myTag>" into another string var.
I think I need to use the RegExp command in Javascript but I am unsure.
