Firefox JS = No Show, OK In IE
Jan 28, 2006
I have a javascript file that I am including in a page. It works great in IE, but not in firefox. I've basically ignored firefox now for as long as it's been out (big mistake) but now that I finally looked at our user stats (25% firefox!) I can't ignore it anymore.
The goal is to incorporate news content from my news site into my forum, and to only squeeze the forum IF the user browser width is high enough (1024 and higher).
Anyways, here is the code, which is included in a file called "sidebar.js"
if (screen.availwidth>800) {
document.write("<iframe src='http://www.xyz.com/content_sidebar.htm' width=餂' height=񟠠' scrolling=no frameborder=0></iframe>");
}
else;
But, it doesn't do anything on firefox. I tried to search but I don't know what about the code is causing the problem.

For me one of the best things about jQuery is that I don't have to worry about browser compatiblity.I wrote some code to extend an excisting jQuery application (Galleria) and only tested it in FireFox. I split a long list with thumbs in several blocks: deel0, deel1, deel2 etc. After that I hide every block except the first one. If the visitor clicks on "Next serie" I hide the first block and show the second. All seemed to go well until I tested the page in IE6. The jQuery effects "hide" and "show" work fine in FireFox but not in IE6. When I click on "Next serie" the next block of thumbs don't show.

I found the toggle function (shown below) and applied it to a form of mine.
It works fine in IE, but in Firefox it appears to fail on the eval lines.
I've searched around but I can't seem to find the correct invocation to get
the field to appear in Firefox.
I've copied below the call and the html of the field itself.

Found a simple script to show and hide layers. Using this to have an ad with 60px height and onMouseOver 350px
function adtechhideElement(elmID)
{
for (i = 0; i < document.all.tags(elmID).length; i++)
{
obj = document.all.tags(elmID)[i];
if (! obj || ! obj.offsetParent) continue;
obj.style.visibility = "hidden";
}
}
function adtechshowElement(elmID)
{
for (i = 0; i < document.all.tags(elmID).length; i++)
{
obj = document.all.tags(elmID)[i];
if (! obj || ! obj.offsetParent) continue;
obj.style.visibility = "";
}
}
but the thing is this doesn't work in firefox/mozilla.
Where should I alter this to get it working in firefox?

In IE, Safari, Chrome, and Opera (to an extent, still some bugs to work out there) the search suggestions show when you type in the box, and hide when you click away from the box, then re-appear when you click in the search box. In Firefox, however, the suggestions still show even when you click away from the box. I can't really figure out why it's happening, I've tried setting the CSS properties for both visibility and display, but neither worked. Here's the code for that part:
Code:
<input type="text" name="search" value="Search Cheezonastick" id="searchbox" onClick="this.value=''; this.style.color='#000000'; search_suggest.style.display='inline';" onBlur="this.value='Search Cheezonastick'; this.style.color='#666666'; [code]...

A pgn-file is a plain text file. It's used for chessgames.I want Firefox 1.5.0.12 on Win XP SP2 to show the pgn-file in a frame when I click on the link.That's the first problem: Since I installed some years ago some chessprogram Firefox always asks what to do with a .pgn-file (Download dialog).I know I can change this behaviour either in config:about or in some configuration file for mime types.But how to do that??? (There are extensions for that, but only for Firefox 2 and higher. ): And I would prefer to change it via the about:config-file or in the mime-configuration file, some .rdf-file I think.Then I want to access the plain text in that frame with javascript. How could I do that?(If you need a pgn-file to test, just take any text-file and rename the ending to .pgn.)

When I use mouse wheel in Firefox to scroll contents of the DIV, memory usage in Firefox goes through the roof. Code above is a fully working page, if anyone would like to see what's up, just load it up, and start moving your mouse wheel in the area with text. You don't actually have to scroll the text, just moving the wheel back and forth in that DIV will do. Memory usage will start going up quite fast, and after you stop moving the wheel, it will finally come down a bit after a short while. I've highlighted in red the line where mousewheel event is registered for Firefox. I'm not sure if it's really a problem, but since Opera and IE don't have any strange memory usage, and Firefox does, maybe I did something wrong. In everyday use it shouldn't matter [don't expect to have kilometers of content to scroll], but anyway, it is a bit unsettling.

if ((window)&&(window.netscape)&&(window.netscape.security)) {
// OK, this is Gecko/Firefox or someone mimicing it so well
// that there is no way to catch it on the act.
}
But I need Firefox *1.5 or higher* or another (but sure) way to know
that this browser has native SVG support. Here I'm stock.
It seems there is window.navigator.productSub and on my Firefox 1.5
it's 20051111
But I'm not sure: this "build version" is going up guaranteed or it's
random like CLASSID? Also is the same Firefox release has the same
build for all platforms or not? mozilla.org seems silent.

I have a BETA site that I'm testing. It looks good/works fine in IE, but Firefox has some troublesome breakages that I can't figure out how to fix without breaking IE. The one I'm most concerned about is that I have a video player that was working a couple of weeks ago, and several revisions to the page later (not the video iframe), it's not. Works great in IE, but in Firefox, the controls in the video player are either sticky or do not work altogether. The video is called through an iframe (needs to be done that way by request) and the embed is as such:
<head>
<script type="text/javascript" src="swfobject.js"></script>
</head>[code]....
I have also tried it with the following parameter, and it still didn't work in FF, but it didn't seem to affect it in IE:
so.addParam("type", "application/x-shockwave-flash");
What kind of front page revision (the page containing the iframe) might have changed this? Is it a recent FF update?
