Date Object Function - Variables Coming Up Undefined
Apr 27, 2010
I am trying to use my date Object function to get the date from the comp but my variables in my function are coming up undefined.
Here is my function:
function displayTime() {
var currentTime, hour, minute, second, range, m, s
currentTime = new Date()
var hourInt = currentTime.getHours()
var minuteInt = currentTime.getMinutes()
var secondInt = currentTime.getSeconds()
if (hourInt > 12) {
range = "PM"
hourInt -= 12
} else {
range = "AM"
}
hour = String(hourInt)
if (minuteInt < 10) {
m = String(0) + String(minuteInt)
} minute = m
if (secondInt < 10) {
s = String(0) + String(secondInt)
} second = s
document.timeForm.timeBox.value = hour + ":" + minute + ":" + second + " " + range
alert(hour + ":" + minute + ":" + second + " " + range)

I have a single page with a single form, but I have split the form into 3 divs for styling purposes. I have some java script that is supposed to pull values from the text fields, and put them in a selct box using 'document.forms[0].name.value', but nothing is happening. I am wondering if having the form split into to divs is causing the JS to not be able to find the fields, using the forms array? Here is the form portion of the html code:
<form name="roster" action="">
<div id="left">
<dl>
<dt>Team Name</dt>

I've boiled down my code to the essence of the problem; a variable which serves as a parameter to a function keeps coming up as 'undefined'. The code is quite simple:

I was working on Date() object of javascript. When I write:
today=new Date();
year=today.getYear();
month=today.getMonth();
day=today.getDay();
Here everything was correct but when I print month then I got currentmonth-1 that if the currentmonth is 5 then t get 4. If the current month is 07 then I get 06. At last I worked by adding 1 with month like month+1.

I have come across an issue that only happens with IE.I have a custom save function that is designed to handle different ajax submits but I will simplify it for debugging. The issue is that once I make a submit everthing is fine at first. Then once I try to submit a second time it craps out. I am checking to see if there is an onsubmit function and then executing it like so before continuing. After the inital submit it is no longer found. When I alert the typeof document on the form it returns object but when I add the onsubmit it says object expected or object is null or undefined.
Code:
function secureBarSubmit(formId)
{
alert(typeof document.getElementById(formId)); // object always
alert(typeof document.getElementById(formId).onsubmit); // func first time then it is broken
[code]...

Looking for clarification of undefined variables vs. error in
JavaScript code.
e.g.
<script>
alert( z ); // this will be an error, i.e. an exception
</script>
<script>
alert( this.z );
alert( window.z ); // both equivalent, no error, but window.z is
'undefined'
</script>
why is it that 'z' alone without the global object generates an error,
shouldn't it also be undefined? for example if i did
z = 0;
the javascript interpreter knows to create a global variable z

I have looked at this code and determined I will get the following if I run individual variable.
x = 10
y = 5
z to 5
However I am not sure. Because when I run the function using document.write
Like this:
Code:
document.write(get_xyx());
I get undefined
Here is the code:
Code:
<script type="text/javascript">
var n=5;
var x=n + n;
var y=n + n;
function get_xyz () {
var x = n;
y = n;
z = n;
}
get_xyz();
</script>

I'm moving from php to JavaScript. What I want to do is assign a value to a variable only if the variable hasn't been assigned yet.
In php it would be:
if($variable=='')
$variable='default value'
I thought the equivalent in javascript would be:
if(variable=='')
variable='default value'
Can anyone explain why this doesn't work, or what I should do instead?

Is there any way at all to create a new template object that inherits from the built in Date object so as to be able to add new methods to that child object without adding them to the built in Date object? I've tried everything I can think of and as far as I can tell it keeps referencing the Date function instead of the Date object and so doesn't work.

I'm displaying a loggin page.
If the user entered an invalid UserName/Password I display the page again.
When this happens I want to give the user a different message then the one displayed when the page was initially displayed.
I use the Response.Redirect method from the page checking the submition.
When I do that I call the page with a parameter like this Response.Redirect("Page.asp?FROM=1").
When I get the parameter in the page I know I need to show a different message.
The problem is that if the page is called without the parameter, I
cannot determine that the parameter is missing.
The codse is very simple:
from_flag = Request.QueryString("FROM")
Now is the problem -
if I use if(from_flag == 'undefined') - this condition return
false.
but if I display from_flag using Response.Write(from_flag) I get "undefined"
if I use if(typeof from_flag == "undefined") - this does not work since the typeof return "object" in both cases when I call the page with the parameter or without the parameter.
also I tried to comnpare with null does not work.
By the way if I use VBScript as the script lang - it works fine I just need to compare the from_flag with vbNullString and all is well....
