Change Value Of A Variable Using An Event?

Jul 22, 2011

Well the topic pretty much sums up the problem. I'm pretty familiar with using events to alter the value of an html tag or attribute via the DOM. I was wondering if it is possible to use an event to alter the value of a variable within. Well I wrote the script below to test that and sure enough it didn't work. So if by some chance it is possible to use events to do alter the value of a variable, how does one go about that?[code]...

JQuery :: Why PreventDefault At Keypress Event Prevent The Change Event

Aug 13, 2011

look at this script :

$(function(){
$('input').bind('keypress',null,b).bind('change',null,a);
});
function a(){

[Code].....

this script bind both keypress and change of the text box to functions b and a. at keypress event handler if user type a char on input box the value of input box change to x and the user char discarded. In this case we expected to run the onchange (change) event because the textbox value is changed BUT this doesn't happen.

I want to load an html div in a variable, modify it in another variable; and then change the document injecting the contents.

2. I modify an attribute of <param> using attr() and I put the result in a var (newcode)
3. I change the html in the doc

I've used the debugger, and all steps give the expected results, except of newcode.html(), which is a null string. Why?

Binding An Event To A Variable.

Nov 14, 2006

I would like a function to be run whenever a variable is updated. I
have tried binding the onchange event to it, and it doesn't work. I
think I understand why, however, I would like to know if there is
anything that I can bind to my variable that will fire the specified
function whenever the value changes.

Is it possible to do this, or would I have to make a class for it?

Can I Assign An Event To A Global Variable?

Oct 4, 2007

I was wondering if anyone knew if/how to assign an event to
a global variable?

I tried to do it and IE 7 came back with an error saying "Member not
found"
My code looked similar to the following:

var globalEvevnt;
function showPopup(event){
globalEvent = event;
alert(globalEvent.type);
setTimeout(function(){unhideDiv()}, 2000 );

}

function unhideDiv(){
alert(globalEvent.type); //Member not found error found on this
line
}

I was wondering if I had declared the globalEvent = new Object();
would that make any difference? I thought everything in JS was an
object so the event could be stored to one as well?

Accessing Variable In Hover Event

May 13, 2011

In hover, the structure is
Code:
$("div.x2").hover(
function(){
var a = 1;},
function(){
alert(a);}
);

If I want to access a that was set in the mouseover part of this structure, or I want to change the value of a from the second function, do I have to create a global variable that can be accessed by both or is there a way to pass this variable back and forth between the two functions since they are both within the hover event?

Variable Scope In Onclick Event

Oct 17, 2010

I have this web application where users are able to fill out and submit reports. The reports and scripts are part of a whole system, that is, they are used on a couple of different clients written in both vb and c#. This is the web-version of those clients.The scripting language is javascript and is executed using different script engines on the different systems. But for the web-version it is just executed in the browser.The different fields in the report can be accessed by typing:ID1.value. To get ID1 to apply for the input-field with id ID1 I had to in the initfunction of the page write a window["ID1"] = document.getElementById("ID1");

But my problem is when this element change. Cause in the report I have a special element that in the browser is translated to a table-element with a report-field in each cell.When I switch the current row, I need to update the window["ID1"] to equal the correct report field on the selected row. But when trying to access the new variable ID1 from a buttons onclick event it is undefined.<input type="text" id="test" onclick="alert(ID1.value);" />What I think happens is that when the page is first drawn the onclick event is created and as I understand, variables inside an event has the same value as when the event was created.

So if ID1.value was something when the page was created it will be the same when it is called even if the value of ID1 is different. And that seems to be the case. When I debug the page, before entering the event, ID1.value has the correct value while inside the event it is undefined and after the event it has the correct value. If I write window["ID1"] correct value is also shown.But a weird thing is that in another place in the code I had the same problem but instead of having the code inside the onclick event I first had a global function changeActiveRow and inside that I had an eval, eval(document.getElementById("ID1_script")) where ID1_script is a hidden element whos value is a script using ID1.value and that works.

Change Variable Value On The Fly

Jul 1, 2011

I have a js script that produces a calendar and will like to move previous and next. When page loads it checks if month, year is already defined or else use the current month, year. and when the previous button is clicked calculate the previous month and change the month variable. I can get the month and year value to change, but it does not affect the code again. i.e because i have already declared month value at the beginning of the code, if i change the value via an onclick the new value won't affect the code, which i want to. This is the code that is relevant to what i am saying

cal_current_date = new Date();
var month = returnMonth();
var year = returnYear();
function returnMonth(nMonth){
var month;
if(nMonth == undefined){
month = cal_current_date.getMonth();

JQuery :: Adding A Click Event To A Variable?

Apr 23, 2010

I have a setting where I construct an image reference which I then append somewhere in the DOM, like so for instance:

var one = "<img src = "test.jpg" ";
var two = "/>";
var my_img = one + two;

and then I add it to DOM using after() function. It works fine. However, I also need to add a click event to it. I tried to do this:

my_img.click(function(){
});

and then append it using after(), but it doesn't seem to work. One thing I can think of is append it after a certain ID, then look for it as a child of that ID and add click to it this way. I haven't tried this, but it'll probably work.

Change Focus Using Variable

Jul 23, 2005

I'm trying unsuccessfully to use a variable in a script that changes focus.

Depending on which link a user follows (navigates via keyboard or
clicks), I'd like to change the focus to an input name="q" in different
forms on the page.

<A onClick="changeFocus('basicsearch')"
HREF="#basic">basic site search</A>

<A onClick="changeFocus('advancedsearch')"
HREF="#advanced">advanced site search</A>

The script I have is:

function changeFocus(category) {
document.'(category)'.q.focus();
return false;
}

It doesn't work. I'm not sure how to insert the parameter into the focus
statement. What am I doing wrong?

How To Detect Variable Change

Feb 3, 2011

I've been looking at Eli's object.watch [URL] script and I understand the idea of it and what it does but I'm so confused about how I actually use it in my script! Even if this seems quite obvious to most, I'm just not seeing it I might even be trying the wrong approach to it entirely and object.watch isn't what I actually need to be using!I've got my script here:

Code JavaScript:
<script type="text/javascript">
jQuery.fn.elementlocation = function() {

[code].....

Now as you can tell, the server load will be pretty high with the mouse move constantly calling data from the fetch.php page through AJAX. SO, what I'm trying to do is only call upon the AJAX when the variable "block" changes it's value. So I assume, I have to somewhere store a value, and then when the value changes check it with the stored value, but of course, the stored value will always change to the new value too since it's all determined by constantly changing variables? So how would I get it to only call the AJAX section when the block number changes?

OnClick Event Images Deliver A Variable To Another Page?

Sep 11, 2009

I have a html page with a lot of thumbnails. The idea is that when the user clicks on an image the onClick event is to display another detailed form and deliver to that form the name of the image in a variable. In the detailed php-form there is a query to MySQL to retrieve a record. The record will be retrieved by a Query based on the name of the picture. Apparently the PHP cannot do the job. I had an idea to make the thumbnail page as a form and to use use a hidden field with the thummnail name which should be carried on with the $_POST array through the submit button but i do not want to have a submit button. The more elegant way is just by clicking the picture the detailed page is opened and the variable is transferred where my php code can make use of the variable for the query. I have never used java before so you have to excuse for the lack of knowledge.

Pass A PHP Variable To A Window.onload Event Function?

Dec 21, 2009

How do I pass a PHP variable into a window.onload event function? I have a URL that I need to pass to the JavaScript file that has this function in it. The JavaScript file itself is being linked from the PHP file that will pass the variable and I've seen many examples of how this is done via embedded JavaScript, but none where someone is linking to an external JavaScript file. I suppose this is probably a trivial matter to most of you, but I've never done this before and could use some guidance!
