Can An AJAX Request Be Left Open For Multiple Responses?

View 17 RepliesI've been reading a lot about Comet and I've been interested in implementing it. It doesn't sound that difficult, but I have yet to find concrete examples of what it is, so I don't know how to actually use it.
I've seen some examples where new ajax requests are made as soon as old ones are complet but this doesn't make any sense to me. It seems this method is a complete resource bandit.
For example, how do I open a long-lived HTTP request? If the request is long-lived, when does the callback get actually called - at the very end of the request (status == 200 and readyState == 4) or can I call it intermittently to download new data while my PHP script is in sleep()-ing?
I have an application running on a non-interactive kiosk that I need to keep updated with information that will be provided by a remote server. To do this, I've created an XMLHttpRequest/Microsoft.XMLHTTP object that checks the modified date in the header of a watched file that resides on a remote server.
This function runs on an interval, and if it detects a change in the modified date since the last check, it retrieves new information from the remote server.

I need to encrypt my AJAX requests and responses from the server. As the message format I use simple JSON.Can you advise any libraries about it?
View 7 Replies View RelatedThe general outline is that I have part of a page that deals with the addition, editing and deletion of upcoming events. Data is stored in a MySQL table. The form design (in traditional terms) would be very simple requiring three fields, one for the Event Name, one for the Event Description and one (hidden) to identify the UniqueID of the event in the MySQL table. (As the reference to make edits.) The table therefore has 3 fields. (There are more such as Timestamp, clientID etc, but they are not important here.)
I envisage three functions, one to add, one to edit and one to delete the event listed on the page. I have 3 php files eventadd.php, eventedit.php and eventdelete.php which speak for themselves.However, this is where I have the problem. What I have been doing is returning the xmlhttpresponse as a formatted HTML page for the two 'form' elements because whilst I can return unformatted text containing the relevant fields in one response, I don't know how to break that down into two sections for the innerHTML of the two 'form' elements that change.
Returning a formatted page does work, but as well as being slower than neccessary, I am also running into character-set encoding issues and I just know that I am not doing this properly. I can supply code and things, but I have a feeling that this problem will have come up somewhere and probably has a recognized solution because to me it seems to be such an obvious requirement to be able to populate several form elements with fields from one recordset.
I am developing a fairly complicated application with a lot of JavaScript and making use of JQuery. The application repeatedly makes simultaneous GET requests.
I am looking for a way of assigning a unique token to each request when it is made, so that I can store information about that request and cache the request / response combo, when using $.get() (or potentially $.ajax() if required for the extra functionality).
So far I have not had any joy and after a while googling this am none the wiser. I have used similar functionality in Flex 3 with the AsyncToken object which can maintain data between HTTP request / response.

I worked with now in jQuery. Property however at present the following problem: [i]I provide a AJAX Request. the side is loaded, the parameters all conveyed and back receives I a complete HTML side. Now I would like to have only certain elements however from this side, like DIV, SPAN etc. How can I make with the AJAX Request return in such a way best, which I can select these elements thereby? Simply it would be unfortunately not functioned over the function $ (element), it even if I indicate the HTML Request as secondly parameter.[/i] Excused, for my bad English. ;-) Translatertool. There is unfortunately too many words, in order to describe my problem. ^^
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a php page which returns a table representing a query sent to a MySQL database. So far it has worked in every case except now that I'm trying to use it to call a stored procedure, in which case the readystate is staying at 1 and never completing.
I have logged the results of the php file both in an error log and looked at the response from the request using firebug, both of which show a correct result.
Why isn't this returning properly?
Here are the relevant javascript functions:
Code:
function customizeType()
{
$("custom-header").innerHTML = "";
$("custom-top").innerHTML = "";
[Code]....
After the page loads, the error log shows correct results for all queries.
I found a menu that operates like I want it to (except it needs to open to the left, instead of the right), but no matter how I put the code into my page, it just screws the page up.....terribly. I have been trying to get a similar menu to work (anylinkmenu), but it is not very good, so I want to use this one instead.
I need the menu to open to the left of the "Facebook" icon at the top of my page in the header. I have put all the code on here below (only the code for the actual menu...not for jquery-1.3.2.min.js or jquery.ui-1.7.min.js.

View 3 Replies View RelatedOn my website the navigation is at the top and right aligned. When you hover over the items on the right and the drop downs begin to appear they drop down and fold out to the right and consequently off the page and not very visible. Is there a way to tell the drop downs to roll out to the left instead of right?

View 8 Replies View RelatedI was guessing if it was possible, using jQuery, to have a link that, when clicked, opens the relative url and sends to it a post request. I'm trying to do this with the $.post function, but i found the problem that the request is sent, but the page isn't opened.

I need some help achieving an effect.
<span>SOME TEXT</span>
First part, move "SOME TEXT" left 20px and fade to 0 at the same time. Easy enough.Second part, repeat the same effect half way through the first part is done and the starting point is left 20px.So I would need to create the first effect. Half way through the first effect the second effect starts but it has a different starting point.
Anyone know how to return true or false to an event handler based upon the results that come back from a Prototype Ajax.Request call?
I have a link with an onclick handler that calls a function getLoggedIn(), which looks like the following:
function getLoggedIn(type) {
ajax = new Ajax.Request(
'includes/checkloggedin.php',
{
method: 'get',
parameters:'&type='+type,
onComplete: checkLoginResult
});
}
As any analysis of request.responseText occurs in checkLoginResult(), not getLoggedIn(), how can I pass an Ajax-response-determined return value back to the event handler?
I have a graph that i need to be dynamic in the sense that a user would click a checkbox and select which info will be displayed. I can do this using php, but i want a seamless transition done. My thoughts are AJAX SO basically i need a way to send a a request to a php page lets say graph.php with a variable set liek so: graph.php?id=1
Can someone point me in the right direction regarding this please, i presume i can use the onCheck on the check box and have a small function to handle the ajax request, Just to summerize:
Checkbox Clicked --> Request to php page with a variable set --> Return the php page.
I am currently creating a social network. On a profile if a user has comments they can delete them. I am running AJAX to update the database and display the comments refreshed (one deleted will no longer show). The data I am requesting includes the following...
<script language="JavaScript">
document.write("<a href="javascript:void(0)" 'CommentsTable', 'PostLink1', 'PostCommentText', 'ViewCommentsText')" id="PostLink1">Post Comment</a>");
</script>
<noscript>
<a href="comment.php?action=post&user=<?php echo $user; ?>">Post Comment</a>
</noscript>
My problem is that the JavaScript from the request does not work, I can only seem to display regular HTML. Is there a solution to this problem to make the JavaScript work or do I have to use an HTML alternative?
i am making a request using Ajax (JQuery) and it keeps repeating the request, it almost seems like it is inside a loop even though it is not inside a loop.
jQuery.ajax({
type: "GET",
cache: false,
url: "<?php echo Yii::app()->request->baseUrl; ?>/member/updatememberinfobox/query/",
[Code]..
I have the following test-script working:
$(document).ready(function(){
$('#up').mouseenter(function() {
$("#results").append('<div id="test123"></div>');
$.ajax({
url: "http://someurl.de/some.htm",
[Code]...
Is there an way to cancel AJAX request?

I'm writing a little application with JSF 2.0 + jQuery. My page contains a simple input form, a submit button and a div containing one div for each string that the user type in the input text field. i'm using JSF 2.0 ajax to send the request to the server and rerendering only the div-container, with the updated content. Initially the div contains a single div with a text example for the user. Every div inserted by the user has the style-class "user", so with jquery I manipulate all off them through a simple function.
Here my code:
But i've encountered this problem when I started using ajax: my jquery function doesn't work on the new content, so I started trying to resolve the problem with live() method as suggested in the FAQ and on several posts
So my code changed a little:
This code doesn't work at all after the submit event, so for test purpose only i've changed the event to click and ,using the event generated from the mouse click, it's working.
But obviously i need to apply my jquery function right after the ajax request and without the user's partecipation.
I'm testing this code on Firefox 3.6.13, but i need it to work correctly also on IE8, Chrome 8 and Opera 10
What's wrong in my code?I have bound the wrong event to the div-container and instead I have to bind the submit-event to the form?
I use JQuery validation plugin to handle my forms, and I'm using the remote
option for some inputs, aside from the usual 'true/false' to detect if the field is valide or not, I need to get a php variable generated on the server, but I don't know how to do it
Is it possible to wait until an AJAX request is completed before moving on to the next instruction. If an example is needed I will be happy to supply it.
BTW, I'm using jQuery for my AJAX requests
