Calling Function Residing On Ancestor Page From Child Page
Dec 13, 2005I am working on a web application and have run into a problem. From a
main window (Window1) I open a child window (Window2), and from that
child window I open a grandchild window (Window3). I need to call a
funcion that resides on Window1 from Window3. I do this successfully
by calling a function with window.opener on Window3, which calls a
function with window.opener on Window2, which calls a function on
Window1.
My problem comes in with the case of a user closing Window2, and trying
to carry out the function on Window3 that calls the function on Window
1. I have already tried window.top, but it doesnt seem to work.
window.opener of course returns the error "window.opener has no
properties".

Mar 10, 2010ring how could I call a function on a separate page from another page; I know if you want to call a function you write something like this:
<a href="javascript:myFunc()" target="my_frame">Click Me!</a>
But what I wanted to do is, says I have two pages: page1.html and page2.html, and in page2.html I have a few JS functions namely myFunc1(), myFunc()2 and myFunc3(). Then I am inserting a few links in page1.html with an iframe below all the links with the name="my_frame", and what I want to do now is for the 3 <a> links I want to open up page2.html into the iframe (e.g. <a href="page2.html" target="my_frame">open Func 1</a>) but also when the page is loaded, one of those 3 functions would be invoked correspondingly depending on which link on page1.html I clicked.

I've come across a problem however, as i need a modal box to appear when a page loads, but i can't work out how to call the function at the top.
I guess it is just a case of in the:
$(document).ready(function() {}
of the page i want this to appear straight away calling the function:
$('a[name=modal]').click(function(e) {
but i don't know how to reference it, or if it can be?
Page Capturing All Onkeypress Events By Calling Function KeyPress?
Sep 5, 2009I am currently trying to figure out some event stuff with Javascript. I have the page capturing all onkeypress events by calling my function keyPress, and passing the event as an argument.
The key presses get passed to a text field that I have on the page (even if it's out of focus at the time of the key press) by using textfield.focus() within my keyPress function. This seems to pass the event along to the text field so that it registers the stroke and handles it as if the field was in focus at the time of the key press.
My problem lies in that I need to then grab the new value of the text field for use with another part of the script. It seems though that with the way I'm setting focus, it'll execute the rest of my keyPress function (with the outdated text field value) before the text field handles the event.
Is there a way to yield the event to this text field first?
Sorry, this was a long post, but I guess here's a short recap: If I handle key presses via the body of the page, so that regardless of the text field's current state of focus it updates the text field accordingly, is there a way to have that happen first before the rest of my function that needs to use the new value of the text field?

Jul 17, 2011I have a form button with id="submit". When pressed, ClickGeocode(credentials) is called. This works fine and dandy with: $('submit").click(ClickGeocode) Despite there being no indication that the function takes an argument 'credentials'. So when I want to call the function at some point in my code, I should be able to do something like ClickGeocode(credentials) ... no? However, my issue is that credentials isn't once defined in my code - it is part of Bing Maps function... like so:

map.getCredentials(MakeGeocodeRequest);
}
So why does it work using .click(), and how can I call the function without user interaction (simply somewhere in my code) even if 'credentials' is not defined?

Feb 19, 2010I am using this Browser Plugin call: world = new MTSPlugin( '../obj/main.mtx', '100%', '100%', '', 'simple', ''); in the middle of my page, where I want to load this object. (It is a 3d rendering modul Viewpoint Player)
Now I want to add a browser check, as this plugin runs only in IE. When I dedect that the page is loaded with IE, I am writing via Jquery a class name into my body tag.
I thought, it would work if I do the following:

}
But for some reason, the if fails, as it seem that the plugin is called earlier than the jquery browser check, so the class name is not set at this point.
Then I thought, making a function arround and call it onLoad within the body tag.
Which has the disatvantage that the MTS Plugin is loading at the worng place on the page.
What I want, is that the call to the object "world = new MTSPlugin( '../obj/main.mtx', '100%', '100%', '', 'simple', '');"
is only at a trie condition at the place where it should be...

What I want to do is have a javascript function in my main javascript file which uses features of jQuery such as show, hide etc. and then I want to call this javascript function from the other page specific javascript file.

May 13, 2011I am creating a little word guess game, with a random function which picks the word from an array of 10 words. The second function checks if the users' letter choice is part of the secret word. Currently, each time the checkGuess() function is called, the word is changed, probably because I am calling the wordPicker() function from within. The wordPicker randomly chooses the word, then returns that word. All I want to do is pull that word into the checkGuess function, without calling the wordPicker function as it currently does. Here is the code:

I want to check if they are empty and return false(stay on the same page), else go to action page.Here is what I am doing, I Created three functions tableA(), tableB(),tableC() call them from function abc(). These functions tableA(), tableB(), tableC() return false if one of the field is empty and stop furthur processing and remain in the same page. If none(errors), then go the other page.i.e if table B has empty fields, page should stop furthur processing and remain in the same page.Here is how I am doing it Can somebody please point out what I am doing wrong here.Even when there is empty field, the code moves me to the actionPage.

Feb 4, 2010I have been a mainframe programmer for over 20 years - I have a new project that requires browser pages written in JavaScript. I currently begin with a HTML page that assigns the values retrieved from a third party vendor's API to an array. I pass this array to another page to build a table full of links - when a client clicks on one of the links, two variables are put into yet another array and a third page is called, successfully passing the required data. Ultimately page 1 and page 3 will be .asp pages so that additional third party vendor API's can be called. The problem is this: after the third page is called from the second page, it displays for a second and then returns to the second page. When I click back I can see the third page, followed by the second page, and finally the first page. My question is this: why is the third page not displaying in the browser? I'm sorry if I have not posted this correctly as I really am a mainframe programmer and this is my first time doing anything code related with web pages

A very important part of what needs to be in the captions is text compiled by a separate function, in the project library.I've tried this with and without curly, square and round brackets, with and without semicolons and quotes- all with varying results. Sometimes the function is called, but it appears at the very top of the page and nowhere near the proper <span> tag.

Nov 29, 2005The page checks a database to see whether the user has a value in a field and if they do then a hidden variable in a form is set to this value. However, if they don't, the form displays a drop down box for them to accept a value. The problem arrises with a bit of form validation that is being run on the page. The button to submit the form is disabled unless the user selects an option from the drop down, once they've done this the button not only enables but also changes its value. When the user already has a value in the DB then the button must be enabled and its value changed. I've tried doing this by calling a function in the onLoad method but this isn't working. Code:
