I'll get it out their early, I am somewhat of a javascript novice.
Here is the code I am working with:
<script type="application/javascript">
$(document).ready(function() {
var numitems = $("#foo6 > li").length;
var secondstartpoint = numitems -3;
[Code]....
As you can probably see I am trying to set the start point of a jquery carousel to equal a variable that I have created. You can see I have tried " start: secondstartpoint", but this isn't working. I think possibly because the way the plugin is formatted so that the "start" option can only equal a number.

Has anyone seen this before..
var myText = 'blah';
$('<span>').text(myText);
The above correctly sets the text of the span to blah in all browsers except IE. The only way I've gotten it to work in IE is...
$('<span>' + myText + '</span>')
Not the worst hack, but all the extra typing is adding up.

Is it possible to have a text box input searching for the entered text on another webpage in the same way Find In Page would do? I have a webpage that I want users to input an item, and that this will open the targeted webpage and bring you to (and highlight) the matched item(s) like find in page does. Is this possible or is the easiest way to just make users open the link to the target page and just complete the find in page search there?

I am working on a multiplication table and it is suppose to allow you to enter a value, and then if the value is correct, the text color will turn green, if it is incorrect the value will turn red, it isn't doing anything, I am not that good in programming with Javascript, so I think it's probably something with my code, all the elements are named properly the are all input fields.
function checkMath(s,n)
{
if(document.getElementsByName("math_"+n.toString()+"t"+s.toString()).value == s * n)
[code]....

I have some Javascript which says this:
Now that is fine when the text is only one line long. Suppose it's longer? What I want to do is have Javascript give the variable contentString its text from a hosted text file in a similar manner to the way Javascript can insert more Javascript using a hosted .js file.
I illustrate what I need to do using some "dummy" javascript:

I've recently moved over from Protoype and was used to using the update() function to replace text within a node - something like
this:
PROTOTYPE
<p id='dText'>text to be replaced
$('dText').update('New text string')
[code]....
Now it appears to me that in jQuery, there isn't an out of the box function to replace the contents of a node without also replacing the
node too, hence the reason I am chaining remove() and append().

I'm trying to re-export a filtered set of XML data. For an input like this:
<object>
<header />
<thing1>
<value1>1</value1>
[Code].....
However, this currently returns 'undefined'. Is there any easy way to do this, or do I need to actually parse the XML below thing1 and manually write my own XML sub-tree?

let's say I have this code markup:
<div id="id1">
This is some text
<div class="class1"><p>lala</p> Some markup</div>
</div>
What I would want is only the text "This is some text" without the child element's .class1 contents.
How would I do that? A normal selector would select "recursively", so how do I limit it to one level?

I've got an unordered lists. I need to make the numbers larger (ordered lists numbers) and keep the text in the list at the same size. So what I was assuming I need to do is make the <li> font-size larger (the size I want the unordered list number to be), then wrap the text with a <span> and make the <span> smaller. I'm using a CMS and since the client will be modifying the text in the CMS, I can't exactly tell them to put <span> text, blah, blah</span> in the unordered lists as they won't figure that out. So how would I write the jQuery to wrap the text in the unordered lists with a span? Currently the output is like so:
<ol>
<li>Item One</li>
<li>Item Two</li>
</ol>
[Code]....

I'm working on a project with span's and event handlers.Basically what I need to do is be able to get the text from within a span when the user mouses over.I know how to set up the event handlers, that's all working fine, my issue is the actual extraction of the text. I've tried using .nodeValue and .TEXT_NODE but these keep coming back null.So is there a way to do something like: var text = document.etElementById ("example"). nodeText;and get a string of text?
