Reading An HTML Document & Extracting Content

Jul 23, 2005

I'm an ASP developer by trade, but I've had to create client side
scripts with JavaScript many times in the past. Simple things, like
validating form elements and such.

Now I've been assigned the task of extracting content from a given HTML
page. If anyone's familiar with the Yahoo! Store order confirmation
screen, I need to be able to grab the total amount from the table to
the right-hand side. (Sample File:
http://www.2beyourself.com/t/sample.html)

If you view the source, this is in a table and enclosed with ugly html.
the value I want to retrieve is wrapped with b tags. Originally I was
thinking of using innerHTML or innerText for extracting the value. But
I find that we cannot gain control of this piece of the Yahoo! Store to
make it work!

So after talking with peers, we thought of reading in the entire HTML
page and using regular expressions to try and extract the value.
Something along the lines of: '<b>[0-9]+.[0-9]{2}</b/>'

I'm not sure how to accomplish this. Could someone please point me in
the right direction? If this solution is even a good one. If you have
something better, I'm all ears! (eyes) If using the regular expression
would be a good solution, I need to find out how to read in the entire
HTML doc, and then parse out that piece.

Problem Adding HTML Content Loaded Using Document.load()

Jul 23, 2005

I'm building a tree control that lazily loads branches of the tree
using the document.load() method.

The external XML document that is loaded is generated by a servlet as
XHTML. What I would like to do is to add the new tree branch to the
correct place in the document in the browser window using the innerHTML
property of the parent node.

The relevant code snippet that I've written to do this is:

var target = document.getElementById(parentId);
target.innerHTML = xmlDoc.documentElement.xml;

This doesn't work, furthermore looking at the W3C DOM API it would seem
that the document.xml property is a Microsort proprietary extension
which makes it unsuitable for my application.

I'm attempting to write a quick piece of Javascript code that will
validate if the end user of the javascript has the necessary VML
attributes set in their HTML. The problem in IE is that "xmlns:v"
does not appear in their attributes property or the
getAttribute('xmlns:v') calls. The real kicker is that the 'xmlns'
attribute does return something.

The HTML Snippet would look like this:

Reading File Content

Dec 20, 2003

The questions "Can I read a file... " show up on the regular basis. The answer to accessing files on the same domain is the XMLHTTP object. Following is a simple wrapper that accounts for differences in Gecko and IE5.5+ implementation and returns the content of a file in a string, or null if an error occured:

function getFile(filename)
{ oxmlhttp = null;
try
{ oxmlhttp = new XMLHttpRequest();
oxmlhttp.overrideMimeType("text/xml");
}
catch(e)
{ try
{ oxmlhttp = new ActiveXObject("Msxml2.XMLHTTP");
}
catch(e)
{ return null;
}
}
if(!oxmlhttp) return null;
try
{ oxmlhttp.open("GET",filename,false);
oxmlhttp.send(null);
}
catch(e)
{ return null;
}
return oxmlhttp.responseText;

Building SVG Document Using DOM Interface Inside HTML Document

Mar 17, 2007

Normally an SVG document is loaded/parsed/interpreted inside an HTML
document using an 'object' (or 'embed') element, although there are
supposedly other ways too. The problem is, the SVG document must be
static this way.

I want to use the DOM interface to build SVG dynamically inside an HTML
document. I am guessing I can build it inside HTML within an 'object' (or
maybe 'iframe'?) element.

My intentions/goals:

In Javascript, I construct an object 'embedSVG' which has properties and
methods for creating valid SVG elements and setting their attributes and
attribute values.

During construction, the SVG document is created with its root element.
During debugging in FF 2.0 (I'll work on an MSIE-compatible format later),
I am using the Mozilla DOM Inspector and comparing nodes when the
'object' element is loading a valid external SVG document, and when I am
appending the child representing the SVG document created by the DOM
functions.

However the child node (#document) does not specify 'svg' as the root
element, but instead 'HTML'. Something is not working.

Here is the relevant code in 'ScriptTest.html' which is the HTML in which
the SVG is supposed to be embedded. Below it is the relevant code for
'svglib.js' which is supposed to contain code for building the SVG
dynamically.

What this code is supposed to do is load the HTML page and execute the
anonymous script, and draw a navy blue-bordered yellow rectangle on a
blank page. This is similar to the example in the SVG 1.1 W3C
Recommendation on page 202 of the 719-page PDF.

I am getting an exception when embedSVG object placeInHTML() method is
called: NS_ERROR_DOM_HIERARCHY_REQUEST_ERR. I find in DOM Inspector in
spite of or after the exception that a document is placed as a child of
the object element, but it is HTML, with a default 'head', 'title',
'body' elements placed.

Where am I blowing it?

Error Reading Text File In HTML 5

May 25, 2011

I have written the following code to read contents of a text file using FileReader object of HTML 5 for Google Chrome.

<script>
function handle_files(files) {
var i;
if (checkBrowser("Chrome")) {
for (i = 0; i < files.length; i++) {
file = files[i];
var reader = new FileReader();
ret = [];
reader.onload = function (e) {
console.log(e.target.result)
}reader.onerror = function (stuff) {
console.log("error", stuff)
console.log(stuff.getMessage())
}text = reader.readAsText(file[i]);
alert(text);
}}}
</script>
<input type="file" multiple="multiple" onchange="handle_files(this.files)">

Unfortunately, the variable text always displays as undefined. Everything above the line text = reader.readAsText(file[0]); works fine. Is there any other solution to read a text file using HTML5/JavaScript on Chrome?

Reading External Text File - Load The Content Of The File Into A Variable In Script

Jul 16, 2010

I'm writing a script and I've encountered a problem.. I have a txt file with many words, each word in a different line. For example: the file words.txt contains:

word1
word2
word3
word4
word5

I need to load the content of the file into a variable in my script. I prefer that all the words will be in the same variable with line breaks, but if you'll figure out a way to put it in an array, it's ok too. I really don't know how to do it, and I tried to google but didn't understand.. By the way, I don't want to change the txt file to js file, I need it to remain txt..

Saving The Document After Adding Content Dynamically

I add a content dynamically to the page on a mouse click and then after the content appears in the screen, I try to save the HTML file from the browser. When I open the saved HTML file, I am not able to see the dynamically added text. This happens only in IE.

This is the code that I use.

"document.body.insertAdjacentHTML("beforeEnd", "<div id='idCanvas'> Sample Text </div>");"

This code successfully adds the new text to the page. But, when I try to save the page from "File -> Save As" and then open the saved file, I am not able to view that text. I need to get that text in the saved document as well.

Document Content (DOM) Inaccessible In Child Window?

Aug 20, 2010

I am writing a script that opens a popup, tries to access the document object in order to access the body object, and then find a DOM element in the child window.Seems simple enough, except that the window opens, and the document and body objects are NOT what they should be.The code for opening the child window (popup) is:

Code:
childWin = open("http://localhost/childDocument.html", ...);
childWinDocObj = childWin.document;
Here are just some of the properties of childWin.document relevant to this discussion:[code].....

And THAT is just how it is supposed to look.Which means that, by putting on the brakes of the execution of the script, the open() function works as expected: it opens the window and is supposed to load the document content specified by the URL in the first parameter!But not really: when the brakes are NOT put on the action of open() , it opens the window, and then delivers document and body objects that are NOT the content of the URL.

Dynamically Inject Multipart MHTML Content Into Document?

Sep 15, 2009

Serverless situation where applet drives document scanner and captures images. Currently use data uri technique <img src="data:image/jpg;base64,BLAHBLAHBLAH> to dynamically change img src (image fed from the applet) when user wants to view a particular image.

Works great in firefox...In ie8, however, the 32K limit on data uri's stops me cold.

I researched switching over to MHTML techniques for IE only....but without server-side generation of the MHTML (or CSS), I am running into issues.

Does anyone know of a way to dynamically 'inject' MHTML content via javascript into current document for use as MHTML image ?
