JQuery :: Equivalent Of Event.observe - Make The Cursor Focus On A Certain Input Element
Jun 2, 2009
I'm trying to make the cursor focus on a certain input element when someone hits a certain key combo (such as Shift+S). Does anyone know how you attach a listener like that and bind it to a key combo?

I can't get out of this riddle and Google seems can't help me.
The problem is that this code doesn't work in iexplorer while it's
perfect in other browser (didn't check in safari):
<html>
<head>
<script src="include/js/scriptaculous/lib/prototype.js"></script>
<script src="include/js/scriptaculous/src/scriptaculous.js"></script>
<script type="application/javascript" language="javascript">
function goofy(id) {
var linkList = $(id).getElementsByTagName('a');
var tmp;
var j;
while (tmp=linkList[j++]) {
if (tmp.rel=='bar') alert ('yes');
else alert ('no');
}
}
</script>
</head>
<body id="corpse">
<a href="http://www.foo.bar" rel="bar">foo</a>
<a href="http://www.foo.bar">foo</a>
</body>
<script type="application/javascript" language="javascript">
var init=goofy('corpse');
Event.observe(window,'load',init);
</script>
</html>
Now, what's the point? I'm sure it isn't a prototype problem so it's my fault, but where? Do you have any hint? Do you have some offence for my incompetence (but only in combo with hint)?

I have the following script, which uses prototype.js and is called when the page loads:
function getAllDefs() {
allDefs = document.getElementsByClassName('def');
var defs = $A(allDefs);
defs.each(function(def){
Event.observe(def, "click", listElement, false);
});
}
It adds an onclick event handler to each element with a 'def' class. Clicking the element then calls the "listElement" function, defined as follows:
function listElement(e) {
alert(this.nodeName);
}
This works great in Firefox, returning "SPAN" for the element. However, in IE6, "undefined" is returned. I've tried nodeType and innerHTML as well, and all are "undefined" in IE6. Anyone know what the deal is here with IE? It's somewhat hard to tell since IE's responses are so vague.

vBulletin uses a template system so I can't create a separate element for everything -- we have had several people ask for a "skip to the next post" feature and I'd like to implement that for them My first thought was to use anchor tags such as:
<a name="$post[postid]">
for each post and then to create a link for "Jump to Next Post" which would advance the user to the next instance of <a name="$post[postid]"> in which the postid obviously would've changed. With that I didn't know if there was a way that I could have javascript look for the next instance of this, or to pull the postid number and add 1 to it to find the next post on the page. I'm also not sure if it would need to be as complicated as reading where it was at and then adding one and directing person to that anchor point, which is why I thought maybe it could just look for the next instance of <a name="$post[postid]"> and refocus the screen on that.
It doesn't have to be an anchor, it can be a hidden input, whatever makes the JS be able to seek it as a point to move the page to. We do have some members that select a different number of posts per page than the default, so I'm guessing that the plus one might not be a great idea if they used a smaller number per page and then clicked the last one, whereas people with more per post wouldn't need to stop at the same point before it no longer let them. If there's a solution for that, that'd be great as well (such as once it hits the last element on the page, it no longer receives instruction, goes to the top of the page, or something).

This code works fine in Firefox and Opera, I can see that it put focus
on the correct input in IE, but by the time the page has loaded
completely it loses focus.
The first time you enter the page it works fine in IE too, but if you
click a link which gives the input a value after reloading the page the
above happens. Code:

<html><head>
<script src="jquery.js"></script>
<script type="text/javascript">
addIframe = function() {
$('body').append('<iframe>');
} appendIframe = function() {
$('iframe').contents().find('body').append('appended');}
</script>
</head><body>
<button onClick="javascript:addIframe();">addIframe</button>
<button onClick="javascript:appendIframe();">appendIframe</button>
</body></html>
Now this work perfectly fine with jQ 1.6.2, but does not work with 1.4.2 because 1.4.2 does not yet know .find(element).

I have a table with a date field in each row:
The table, and the input id element, are dynamically created from database records and I use jQuery live to initialize the datepicker for each field, like so:
The idea is that when I click in the input field, the datepicker pops up and allows the user to input a date. While the date shows in the input field in the table, the value attribute of the input field is empty. I can't use the getDate() method on the datepicker, since I can't programmatically connect the datepicker element in any particular row with the input element in that row. I tried the onClose method shown below, but that doesn't work either. Has anyone done this successfully?

Interesting question: Does a form SELECT have an equivalent to a form INPUT type="text" defaultValue?
For example: if an input field has a value of "Click Here" when a form first loads, and is set to become "" (blank) when focus is put on it, you can have JavaScript set the value to defaultValue ("Click Here") upon blur if nothing was typed.
Is there an equivalent for a SELECT option? If a different option is selected, can you compare that new option selectedIndex value to the original option selectedIndex value that was when the form first loads?

In FireFox, when one clicks on a fold and the fold expands, and if the mouse pointer is over the expanding content, then focus is drawn to each of the sub-menu items as they pass the mouse pointer. This makes the animation look a bit juddery.
In all other browsers, one clicks on a fold, focus is drawn away from the mouse pointer, the fold expands and then when one moves the mouse again the mouse pointer gets its focus back.You can see this best by clicking on the tabs "curriculum", then "admission", first in IE and then in Firefox.Is there any way to make the mouse pointer give up its focus in Firefox, so when the animation is taking place it ignores such rules as Code CSS:
.sub_link:hover{
background-color:#E8EFCF;
}
which have been applied to the sub-menu items?l would be something like "cursor.blur();" although obviously that won't work.

First text box, and the last text box, I made them uneditable. What I wanted to do was, setting the cursor focus in the second text box.

I have created a form with malsup's Form Plugin wherein it submits on change of the inputs. I have set up my jQuery script to index drop down menus and visible inputs, and uses that index to determine whether keydown of tab should move focus to the next element or the first element, and likewise with shift+tab keydown. However, instead of moving focus to the first element from the last element on tab keydown like I would like it to, it moves focus to the second element. How can I change it to cycle focus to the actual first and last elements? Here is a live link to my form: [URL]. Here is my script:
$(document).ready(function() {
var options = {
target: '#c_main',
success: setFocus

jQuery("td.divisionTrigger input, td.groupTrigger input, td.hqTrigger input").focus(function(){
