I am pretty comfortable with jQuery and the validation plugin as well.
I am having an issue where:
User clicks a button it opens a lightbox (I am using Fancybox) - a form appears inside the modal. The data is submitted via AJAX and I am trying to validate the form before the form within the lightbox is submitted.
My button with the click handler right now does a GET to a server to send the data. Along with some other JavaScript. What is the best way for me to validate my form within a lightbox, and submit after it validates. Sending AJAX.

Tested it in Opera, FF 3.5 - there, the result shows that the submit button was sent too. however, in Chrome, it is not sent. It even works in IE8 (sic), didn't test lower versions. Might be a Chrome bug, but since jQ should be cross-browser and work the same everywhere, then Chrome could do with a workaround or smth.

The following will submit the form data to popup by clicking the submit button. I want it will submit the form automatically to the popup, there is no submit button in this page. Basically this page should not show up.
<script type="text/javascript">
function submitmyform(f) {
f.target = 'foo'
window.open('',f.target,'menubar=no,scrollbars=no, width=800,height=800');
f.submit();
return false;
}
</script>
<form name="myform" action="popup.asp" target="_blank" method="post"
onsubmit="return submitmyform(this);">
<input type="hidden" name="item" value="item"/>
<input type="submit" value="submit to popup"/>

I have a starting page, Page1.php that uses Page1.js.In Page1.js, I'm using the onclick event for a button that's on that page. When the button is clicked, it goes to Page2.php. Okay, fine.Page2.php is using Page2.js. But when the browser switches to page 2, I get a javascript error because, somehow, it's still referencing the Page1.js file. (Using IE8)So how do I 'dereference' the first javascript file, so that when Page2 loads, it doesn't still try to instantiate the objects in Page1.js? (I'm getting a null object error when Page2.php loads).

I have done thus far is set up a simple Ajax request to my server to log in a user (This part seems to work just fine). The problem that I am incurring is that I would like to close the window if the user has been successfully logged in and not close the window (aka - show the form errors via php) if the user did not input the correct credentials.
This is what I have got so far (which simply logs in a user): -note: the php currently just spits out Sucess or Fail to the jquery ajax request and I would like to add a way to verify if logged in then close window but if not keep window open
$(document).ready(function(){
$("#myform").validate({
debug: false,
rules: {
[Code]....
This seems to work fine and dandy to just return Success or Fail to the #results div but is there a way to verify if the user is logged in success or not or at least a way to catch such validation that is sent back from the php script?
I was also playing with adding the below code after the $.post request but it obviously just closes the window no matter what the response.
window.close();
// return
return false;

I'm having trouble with Safari. After i close a popup it does not focus on the parent window. I have been looking around and i think its this sort of thing i need 'javascript:window.opener.focus()" target="_self"' but tbh i'm not in anyway a javascript whizz, so im a little confused.
Here is my current code to close the child window
document.write("<input name='close' class='button popup' type='button' value='Close Window' onclick='window.close()' id='close'>"
So i need to somehow, add in the .opener thing to that.

I have a parent page which I don't have control of. I call my child page from parent page, perform some operations and once I click update child window should close and parent window should be refreshed.Everything seems to work fine except the parent page not refreshing.I tried using window.opener.location.reload(true). But it makes a postback in the parent page and so the values that I update are lost because it makes a postback with the previous values.I tried window.opener.document.locationwindow.opener.document.location. But this doesn't refresh my parent page.

This should probably be pretty basic and I've been googling around as to the best approach to take and still a bit confused. I have a form that currently submits a form to a new window using jquery (shown below.) The form once submitted could go through a few redirects within the new window (it's calling some facebook stuff.)
All I'd like is when the initial new window pops up is for a spinner to appear in the popup window until the first response is returned. Is there a decent example on how to do best achieve this?

While I opened......these child windows(popup)...from the main window

I have a form with about 10 fields, and the action is sent to a php file which processes the form. Now, I also like to use a Thickbox such that the user can preview the page before actually submitting it to the process.php. That means, I have one submit button and one href, which href links to an iFrame thickbox to preview the page. My problem is that I don't know how to obtain the input values in the iFrame, without user clicking on submit (rather i want to get the values through href). something like the preview on this forum, except I want it on thickbox.

Does anyone know how Netflix manages its star rating system? The javascript
is either computer generated or obfusicated. It's more trouble to reverse
engineer than it's worth. I'm not very interested in their particular
solution for rating movies - I'm not in the business - but I'd like to know
the data transfer mechanism behind it.
It looks like they found a solid way of moving data between client and
server without getting the page redrawn. I found another script called
votio.php on the net. It does something similar but requires PHP (why?) to
create a XMLhttp stream. I'm not sure why it's server side. Maybe the
server has to create the stream object then pass it's handle on to the
client on the fly. Close?
I'm using IIS and msdn hints at some similar techniques.
The 10,000 mile view would still be helpful. What's this data transfer
thing called? Why isn't it used more? Why hasn't it replaced forms and
links? It seems incredibly useful and surprisingly stable (eg Netflix).

At the minute, when someone clicks on a link, it opens up the page behind the window so you have to then also close the window. This is the script now: Code:

With Firefox 1.5+, I used the following code to close a window/tab:
===
<html><head>
<script language="javascript" type="text/javascript">
function closeWindow() {
window.open('','_parent','');
window.close();
}
closeWindow();
</script></head><body></body></html>
===
Since I upgraded to Firefox 2.0, it does not work - the window/tab
stays open.
Any idea how I can "load a page" that would force a window/tab close?
