Autofilling A Form Input Value Within A Frame
Apr 11, 2006
The situation is this:
+Must use frames (no iframes)
+the input field resides on another page of a different server not controlled by me but is linked via the frame. Thus the problem - I cannot change any code on the frame page.
+the input field is an ID field that once it is entered, it should post by returning the results
Problem: I need to autofill the value into the input field and then post the form. But the form resides on an outside server. How can this be done?
Efforts to date:
1) I have created a separate button that tries to autofill the value after being pressed. Unfortunately, it only works in a non-frame - I cannot seem to reference the form value inside the frame.
2) I tried to pass the value as form.input.value=xxx, but this just seems to be ignored.

The specific piece I'm stuck on at the moment is this:I have a form with a lot of fields, two of which are subnet (a drop box populated from a database, via PHP) and IP address (a text input box). When the user selects a subnet, the value is sent to a PHP script that queries the DB and returns the next unused IP address. If all I wanted was to display that in a div next to the IP input box, I'd be set -- that works fine.Unfortunately, I can't for the life of me figure out how to get the returned data into a text input box, which is what I actually want.I know that ocument.getElementById("div_id").innerHTML=request.responseText; will display the text in a div in my sample code. I found a post somewhere that implied that frm.getElementById("input_id").value = request.responseText; would do the job for a text input, but it doesn't, at least in any of the browsers I've tested.

am having a problem with a site I have built. The form on the contact page has been autofilled using javascript, when the user clicks in a textfield the field is wiped, when they click out again, if the field is checked to see if there is user input, if there's not, then it puts the default text in again e.g. email, Name, Company etc.Trouble is, this form works fine on my mac in firefox and safari, but not on windows computers in both firefox and IE.

To sum up this issue, I have a parent page, which holds some values in hidden input fields passed to them from the url. On this page, I have an iframe with a form in it, to which I want to pass values from these hidden fields to be displayed for the user in the iframe form. In IE, it works. To accomplish this, im just simply doing a <body onload="GetInput()">. The GetInput function does the following, but for about 10 fields:
Fnamefield=document.getElementById('firstname').value = parent.document.getElementById('firstname').value; Thats it. Once the page loads, i see my values. In firefox it does not work. I know the hidden fields are getting their values, but thats as far as it makes it. I have tried calling the GetInput function after the form is written out and not in the body tag, which still works for IE, but not FF.

I have two frames. Frame "search" contains a search form specifying
an onsubmit action like so:
<form ...
...
</form>
The other frame contains a <img ... where
the perform_search function is defined as follows:
<script language="JavaScript">
function perform_search() {
var frame = parent.frames.search;
var form = frame.document.forms.mainForm;
form.submit();
}
</script>
Now, when hitting Return in the search form, then foo() is called
fine. But when clicking on the <img ...
in the other frame, foo() is NOT called.
Is expclicitly calling foo() from perform_search() the only way to do
it, or is there a magic incantation that might do what I want?

I'm trying to build a page that has two frames, both of which are
generated by a different cgi script.
The lower frame is generated by a script called "control.py".
The upper frame is generated by a script called "getchat.py".
On the lower frame, there is a button called "REFRESH". When clicked, I
want it to be able to read information in a hidden input on a form in the
upper frame, that being .....
<input type=hidden NAME="last_seen" value = "' + str(lastByteLoc) + '">
.... and submit that information to getchat.py.
I have a javascript routine worked out which *usually* does that when I
view the page with konqueror. Unfortunately it never seems to work with
mozilla. Can anybody tell me why? And better still, how I can fix it?
Here's the code generated by control.py ......
In the <head> i have ....
<script language = "javascript">
<!-- hide from older browsers
function refreshPosts()
{
plast = parent.chatframe.form1.last_seen.value;
parent.chatframe.location = 'getchat.py?last_seen=' + plast
}
//-->
</script>
And on the form in the lower frame, I have this input ......
<input type = "button" value = "REFRESH" onClick = "refreshPosts()">

I'm supporting an ASP legacy application and need to implement
"autosave" functionality. I have two frames, one that holds tabs
displaying different pages a user can select, and the other that holds
the page content itself. If a user clicks on another tab without
clicking the Submit button, I want to submit the current form for them
and do some further processing.
The problem is that top.framename.formname.submit() only works
sporadically. Sometimes the document object of the page frame does not
exist. Is there any way to "guarantee" that the document object will
exist? Has anyone ever encountered this problem or have any suggestions?

I am trying to copy a form that is in one frame, using a button on another
frame. The form has a couple of tables inside it. I can get it working
when the button is in the same frame, but not in different ones. I get an
"invalid argument" error on the controlRange.addElement(x) line.
What I have so far is:
<script language='javascript'>
function CopyForm() {
if (document.body.createControlRange) {
var x = window.parent.fraRight.document.getElementById('Fo rm1');
x.contentEditable = 'true'
var controlRange;
controlRange = document.body.createControlRange();
controlRange.addElement(x);
controlRange.execCommand("Copy");
x.contentEditable = 'false'
alert('The table is now copied to memory.
Start Excel, and Paste
the table into a new worksheet.');
}
</Script>
where fraRight is the name of the frame the form is in, and Form1 is the
name of the form I want to copy. The only thing I have changed from when it
was working in the one frame, is:
var x = window.parent.fraRight.document.getElementById('Fo rm1');
used to be
var x = document.getElementById('Form1');
I can do things like alert(x.name) and get the right name of the form, so I
think I have got the object properly. Is there any other way to make sure?

I have a frameset with two frames one, scriptFrame, containing a page with the javascript on it the other, mainFrame containing a page with a form, form1, on in, with the text field, text1 in it.
I want to target the text field and change the value from the script running in the scriptFrame.
The code i have is:
parent.mainFrame.document.form1.text1.value='x'
But this does not work.
I can target the document ok using:
parent.mainFrame.document.bgColor="violet"
And running a script from the page with the form on it I can target the form using:
document.form1.text1.value='x'
So why doesn't it work when I put the two together? Any help would be much appreciated.

I am currently constructing a web-based database and would like to have it so that the main query output appears in a frame in the main window. Some of the queries require the user to make successive choices, each based on the one before, before the final query is built and executed. I would like the user input to occur in a pop-up child window belonging to the frame in the main window.
For example, a table of data is printed out into the main output frame. This table has links to then cross reference the data within it. Ok, so the user will click one of these links which will then pull up a pop-up window giving a little information about the link, and various choices to allow the user to cross-reference this back into the main database.
The point is, I need this query output to go BACK INTO THE PARENT FRAME, as opposed to into the pop-up (child) window I got as far as using <FORM ACTION="opener.location.replace('query.php') NAME="thisform" METHOD="GET">. This runs the query in the parent frame, but does not appear to pass the form data to the server .

I have a domain: example.com; which is the parent.And a subdomain: api.example.com; which page 'receiver.html' is being loaded in an iframe, child of parent. Both pages set document.domain = example.com.
I'm trying to adapt this code:[url] but Idon't want to load jQuery from the <iframe> again but I need to have the method $.ajax() working from the <iframe> otherwise it would be a cross-domain request and the browser would abort it. I tried ingenuously to set via $('iframe')[0].contentWindow.$.ajax = $.ajax() and I just got a shortcut to the parent page jQuery method. I also tried to "clone" it using $.expand (true...) but the method doesn't work for me; probably because of the complexity of the objected I'm trying to clone. So is there a way for me to use jQuery to have only a $.ajax() method in the <iframe> ? I've thought even about creating a XHR in the child-iframe and then use that in the $.ajaxSetup ({xhr: THATNEWXHR}) but I couldn't do it. I mean, I want to use the XHR factory from jQuery (which has fallbacks for IE, etc) but it has to be created from the iframe-child.
Maybe there is other way to make the AJAX call come from the child-iframe.
If you're wondering "why don't you load jQuery from <script> in the child-iframe", there is a reason... As I'm using jQuery plugins + my own custom javascripts + other independent scripts I created a compiler which minifies each file and bundle them in one. The advantage of this is the reduction of HTTP requests. So "why don't you load that bundle inside the child-iframe?", because it's ugly and Twitter doesn't... Yeah, I like to take Twitter as a reference and I think if they were able to make it so can I;
I got to work in most browsers except IE and Operaby doing it with pure javascript.
I'm "attaching" the code for you guys to test. If you open it with Chrome, Safari or Firefox you will receive 2 alerts one with the return of $.get() and another with the return of a request made via XMLHttpsRequest object. Otherwise (if you open it with IE or Opera) you'll get 'undefined' in the first alert but the real return in the second.
This is the example.com/index.htm:

The back button will be on a small top frame and the page that needs to be controlled will be in the main frame.
The top frame is just a navigation system, and all pages will be loaded in the main frame.
Im trying to use this Code:
<FORM>
<INPUT TYPE="button"
NAME="back"
VALUE="BACK"
onClick="history.go(-1)">
</FORM>
Does anyone know how I could accoplish the desired result using this code, or any other code? And what about a foreward button?

I have a document that contains a child frame with name/id = "help_frame".
From Javascript in the top level document I can access the child frame's
elements using:
var elem = document.frames.help_frame.document.getElementById ("chkSynonym");
but if I try:
var elem = document.frames.help_frame.document.chkSynonym;
the result is 'undefined'. What is wrong with my syntax?

In my application I have an iframe that is empty (and not visible)
initially, however when a user presses a button a form is
programmatically submitted and the target is set to the IFrame.
I want to detect when the frame has been loaded with the result of the
form submit.
Of course I have tried some event handlers like onload, onactivate,
onreadystatechange, but they do not work in this example. They only
seem to work, when the "SRC" attribute of the "IFrame" is set, e.g.
not when the IFrame is set as the target of the form.

Go to [URL] to see the layout and what I am going for.

I am using a very simple search-type page to enable users to input a model number and its page appears in a inline frame. Its not a true search as it is simply relying on a person entering the correct html page name to find it. But this works perfectly in my application.The problem I have is that I cannot get the type box to accept enter key as a submitt, only a click of the mouse will submitt the request. If enter is pressed the box loses the users input but no action is taken.I think this may be a javascript issue. I have posted the code below.

I have a parent document that has a frameset with two frames in it. The first frame is a "header" that runs across the top of the site, and never changes. The second frame contains the "content" of the site. Essentially, I am trying to figure out how to prevent the header appearing above external sites when the user clicks an external link in the "content" frame.
Every time the content frame changes to a new URL, I would like the check that URL and determine if the content frame is changing to an external URL (i.e. different domain in URL) or to an internal link (same domain in URL). If the content is changing to an external link, I want to break out of the frame and just load that external link in the top most document.
I would like all of my javascript to be in the parent document, not spread throughout the individual pages of the site. I was trying to approach this by setting the onunload event handler of the content frame, but I am left with a couple of specific questions:
1. In handling an unload event, can you determine the next URL that the document is loading? Code:
