Sliding Footer Layer That SitePoint Uses

Nov 28, 2006

Have any of you seen that footer layer that slides up from the bottom of the screen on some pages at SitePoint? I'm trying to locate a page that does it but can't seem to do so. I'm sure it's somewhat random or lays a cookie to only appear once. Anyway, I'd like to do something similar with my site. If you've seen it, you know what I mean. How can I do this?

How To Mimic The Sitepoint Popup At The Bottom And More

Dec 5, 2007

I really like the sitepoint popup that pops up at the bottom, it looks nice and is unintrusive. I want to make a popup like this but instead of triggering it when I first load the site I want it to show up when I move my mouse cursor to the top outside of the website real estate.

I am experienced with PHP but this really is a JS thing.

Floating Layer - While Scrolling - The Layer Flickers Continuously

Jan 30, 2009

I have created a floating layer using Javascript that remains always on top of page on scrolling.Issue is,at some point while scrolling, the layer flickers continuously.

The html page is as follows:

Many common software systems, JavaScript has a history of security problems. Many of these problems could allow a person with malevolent intent to steal sensitive information from a visitor. The number and type of such holes in security vary among browsers and operating system versions. Most JavaScript security holes have been caught and fixed, but new ones are being discovered all the time. For a list of current security holes check out your browser's and operating system's Web pages. As a Web site author, it is your responsibility to keep up-to-date on the current status of known security holes in the applications you create.

Signing Scripts. In Chapter 11, I explained that JavaScript does not provide the ability to directly access files on the client computer. This can be a very large hurdle to overcome if you're trying to upload a file to a server from the client computer. Fortunately, file uploading is one of many functional enhancements that signed scripts provide. Signed scripts are specially packaged scripts that have been verified and signed to be correct and non-threatening. These scripts have additional rights on the client computer that allow a programmer to do many things that he wouldn't otherwise be able to.

With the introduction of Netscape 4.0, a new security model was put in place that would allow digitally signed scripts to bypass some of the restrictions that had previously been placed on them. A signed script can request expanded privileges from the visitor and, with the visitor's permission, gain access to restricted data. A signed script requests these additional permissions through LiveConnect, which allows your JavaScript code to communicate with the Java Capabilities API. The security model allows JavaScript to access certain classes in Java in order to extend its functionality while still maintaining tight security for the client.

A digital signature is a fingerprint of the original programmer, and it allows the security model of the browser to detect where (or from whom) it originated. A script signer can be a person or an organization. By signing a script, you acknowledge yourself as the author and accept responsibility for the program's actions. A signed script contains a cryptographic checksum, which is just a special value that ensures the signed script has not been changed. When a digital signature is detected, you are assured that the code has not been tampered with since the programmer signed it.

Once you finish writing a script, you can use the Netscape Signing Tool to digitally sign it. Signing a script does the following:

Unambiguously assigns ownership of the script to a person or organization.

Allows an HTML page to use multiple signed scripts.

Places the signed script into a Java Archive (JAR) file.

Places the source of the script in the JAR file.

Once a user confirms the origin of the script and is assured that it has not been tampered with since its signing, he or she can then decide whether to grant the privileges requested by the script based on the validated identity of the certificate owner and validated integrity of the script.

JAVASCRIPT FILE IS AS FOLLOWS:

AND CSS FILE IS AS FOLLOWS:

At some point while scrolling, the div 'movable' flickers continuously, while at some other point,it is perfectly stable.

I noticed that the computer that I used when I signed up for Sitepoint's newsletters does not pop-up that subscription window anymore. But, when I go to SitePoint using any other computer I get the pop-up window almost everytime I return to the site.

Is there a script that does this... and if so, where can I get it? I would love to use that on a new site we are creating.

Sitepoint Mega Menu Safari 2.0?

Nov 18, 2009

I have the mega menu implemented on several sites. The implementations are based off of the tutorial on the site. I just found out that the menu will not work in Safari 2.0 on the Mac. I guess there are still users out there refusing to upgrade.

Using the latest jquery library it won't work at all. If you use the 1.2.3 version as does the hoverintent plugin website it will work except it doesn't display correctly. It seems it shows the hidden div, but doesn't render the background color. I set up a test page here using the example from the tutorial on the site:[URL]..

My site pages are now html4/strict so I used the "function externalLinks" script found here [URL]. I followed the instructions carefully, made sure I copied the script shown to the external.js file and uploaded it into the same directory as the html files. Also made sure that external.js was called as required in the head. Also made sure all target="_blank" were changed to rel="external" as required. Unfortunately, it doesn't work. The link takes the visitor outside my site, instead of creating a new window. I don't get it. Here's one of my pages ... [URL]

Banner Rotator

Feb 1, 2006

I have a space on my page reserved for a banner to denote religious / special events and other notices that may be important for that specific day. At the moment the relevant banner is uploaded the night before ready for the next day.

A bit of research has led me to develop an automated Javascript script that loads up the relevant days banner using the getDate() and getDay() functions. This, however, means I have to name the banner for January 1st as 1.jpg in a folder named Ƈ'.

What I am wondering is whether it's possible to draw up a spreadsheet (or text file) so that I can type in a more memorable filename (e.g. 'christmasDay.jpg') and it locates it in the folder and displays it on that relevant day. Is it possible for Javascript to do this sort of thing?

Another thing I've thought of (as an advanced bit, don't want to run before walking!) is perhaps to have a random banner from a selection shown if there isn't a religious date / special event on a specific day.

Is JS Best For Ad Banner Rotation?

I'm in need of a good, reliable ad banner rotation setup where I can add/delete banners (and their links) remotely because I'm going to use it on over 100 web pages.

My question is: is java script the best way to go?
If so, can anyone provide me with a link to a good script I can try?

I don't need to track how many clicks, so a simple script would work fine.

I tried

document.all.tags("table")[0].style.display = 'none'

no matter what number I used nothing worked.

Using CSS script

TABLE {display:none}

This works, but then I have to go to each table seperately and set the
display to block.

I would like to be able to directly identify the table the banner is
in, so I can disable only the 1 table.
