Script Won't Allow Pass HTML Validation / Sort It?

Apr 1, 2010

Dear all, I got a question. Just want to make sure the my files validate. On one of the pages where I used JavaScript, it won't validate and here are some of the mistakes the w3c states:

Line 20, Column 37: character "&" is the first character of a delimiter but occurred as data

else if (document.documentElement && document.documentElement.scrollTop)

If I change "&" in my embedded JavaScript into "&", will the JavaScript still work the way it is meant?

Form Validation & HTML W3C Validation?

Feb 21, 2010

I have my website www.gebcn.com. If you view source you will see all that I have done, but more importantly my problem. I have the JS code at the top there and I am unable to W3C validate my HTML because of the JS. I am using XHTML strict and would like to stay using it.

The JS I have at the top is my form validation code. I am able to do any validating that I need with this "snippet" of code, I have shrank it from my library version just to use for this newsletter. Until now W3C validating was not important now for some reason it is and I am faced with this problem.

I am not a Javascript guy more of a HTML/CSS guy and I can manipulate JS to suit my needs.

<problem> I have tried to make this "snippet" of JS code an external file but receive multiple errors with the JS calling for the FORM NAME as it is not on the same page. The form NAME=NEWSLETTER is another problem, as W3C says I am unable to use attribute "NAME" in this location. <problem> I would like to keep the JS close to how it is now as I have a library to use this JS over and over again.

JQuery :: Drag & Drop To Sort Categories And Post This New Sort Order To DB?

Jun 9, 2009

OK so Ive been using jquery for a little bit now and love it. I am a ColdFusion developer. I have a need where I would like to present the user with a list of categories and the user can drag and drop to sort, but then I need to post this new sort order to the database. So I see there are a ton of cool drag & drop plugins for jquery. I understand how they work and I can get it to work as far as spitting out DIVS or spitting out ULs that can be sorted, but then what? So now they are sorted on my screen and not really part of the form. How do I translate that into something I can do a post to the database with? Do I do an AJAX call every time they drop an item and try to extrapolate the sort order on that item after they drop it? Do I populate a hidden form field with the constantly updating sort order list? MAybe a list of ID's? How does everyone else go about this this task? I'm sure there is more than one way and I'm sure this is a common task.

Pass A Value Using A Parameter In Html (asp) To A Function?

Dec 19, 2011

I am trying to pass a value using a parameter in html (asp) to a javascript function. When I try to pass a value inside of a variable <INPUT type="submit" value="Next Youth" name=button1 onclick="OnButton1(tst);"> it simply doesn't work (no error msg - just nothing) while if I put a value in the call <INPUT type="submit" value="Next Youth" name=button1 onclick="OnButton1('5393');"> it works fine. The javascript looks like this:

function OnButton1(tst)
{
var pth = "youth_edit3.asp?cIndex=" + tst;
document.YouthEdit.action = pth;
document.YouthEdit.submit(); // Submit the page
}

I've set tst = "5393" but it won't work when I try to pass it. Only a literal value of '5393' works.

JQuery :: Pass A State Variable From HTML To JS?

Aug 14, 2011

I have an Accordion working. To advance from section to section, I want to use both click on the Accordion bar or click a button in the section. This works so long as it is a straight pass through. (section=section+1). If the user goes back, out of sequence, to change a field in a prior section, things 'get out of whack'. I need some way to have a variable in the HTML (that does not show to the user) that identifies the Accordion section and pass it to the Accordion activate method. I currently have this in the HTML of each Accordion section.

Retrieve And Pass Information To And From HTML Forms

Jan 7, 2009

This question may appear opposite of most, but I'm learning JS using a book and I can't understand why/how this particular code works. I'm working on simply retrieving and passing information to and from html forms. This is a very simple script that will change what is selected in the drop down box depending on a button push.

Here is the script:
Code:
function flip(pizzatype) {
if (pizzatype.value == "Veggie Special") {
document.forms["pizzaform"].topping.value = "veggies";
} else if (pizzatype.value == "Meat Special") {
document.forms["pizzaform"].topping.value = "meat";
} else if (pizzatype.value == "Hawaiian") {
document.forms["pizzaform"].topping.value = "hampineapple";
}}

And here is the form's html:
Code:
<form id="pizzaform" action="#" onsubmit="return false;">
<p>
<input type="button" name="veggiespecial" onclick="flip(veggiespecial)"
value="Veggie Special"/>
<input type="button" onclick="flip(meatspecial)" name="meatspecial"
value="Meat Special" />
<input type="button" onclick="flip(hawaiian)" name="hawaiian"
value="Hawaiian" />
</p>
<p>Main Topping: <select name="topping">
<option value="cheese" selected="selected">Cheese</option>
<option value="veggies">Veggies</option>
<option value="meat">Meat</option>
<option value="hampineapple">Ham & Pineapples</option>
</select></p>
</form>

The way I see it is the button onclick will call the flip function and pass it a var, for example "veggiespecial". I understand the code that will perform the actual change on the drop down menu. What I don't understand is the if statement.
if(pizzatype.value == "veggiespecial")...
Shouldn't it be just (pizzatype == "veggiespecial")?
Why does it have to be pizzatype.value? Where the heck does the .value come from???

Possible To Open New Window Or Iframe And Pass In HTML?

Mar 29, 2002

I was just wondering two things about javascript:

1. Is it possible to open a new window and pass in some HTML code? For example:
Code:

window.open('<HTML><HEAD></HEAD<BODY>Hello World</BODY></HTML>', 'test_window', 'width=400,height=200');
2. Is it possible to pass in HTML code (using javascript) to an iframe window on the same page? I just want to update the text in the iframe. For example:
Code:

Some HTML code...
<iframe name="STATUS" src="" </iframe>

<script LANGUAGE=JavaScript>
document.write.iframe.STATUS('<HTML><HEAD></HEAD<BODY>Hello World</BODY></HTML>');

Load And Pass XML File Into HTML Page

Oct 12, 2011

I was reading up on how to load and parse an XML file into an html page and I found through w3 a great tutorial with sample code: [URL]. It appears to work fine on their website but when I try it from my desktop it doesn't work. So what I have is an html file with contents:

<html><body>
<h1>W3Schools Internal Note</h1>
<div>
<b>To:</b> <span id="to"></span><br />
<b>From:</b> <span id="from"></span><br />
<b>Message:</b> <span id="message"></span>
</div>
<script type="text/javascript">
if (window.XMLHttpRequest)
{// code for IE7+, Firefox, Chrome, Opera, Safari
xmlhttp=new XMLHttpRequest();
} else {
// code for IE6, IE5 .....

And then the xml file named "note.xml":
<note>
<to>Tove</to>
<from>Jani</from>
<heading>Reminder</heading>
<body>Don't forget me this weekend!</body>
</note>
For the record I have tried this in chrome and ie.

JQuery :: Callback Syntax And Pass The Id Of The Html Element As Any Parameter?

Mar 9, 2011

I want to understand the callback syntax and pass the id of the html element as any parameter here is my requirement

In my callback, I am passing the load(url..) I want the URL to be dynamic, based on the URL = BaseURL #callingID , where #callingID is the ID of the calling HTML element.

This way I have to write just one callback function and can reuse this to load multiple sections based on where it is coming from.

$('#callback').bind('pageAnimationEnd', function(e, info){
if (!$(this).data('loaded')) { // Make sure the data hasn't already been loaded (we'll set 'loaded' to true a couple lines further down)

JQuery :: Pass Dimensions To Mouse Functions Instead Of HTML Element?

Mar 9, 2011

I'm developing an image slider. I'd like to be able to trigger functions when the mouse leaves an area, sort of like

$('#someDiv').mouseout or $('#someDiv').mouseleave

except instead of passing the div to the function I have a dimension I'd like to pass to it.

I have box like so[code]...

I have calculated the dimensions from the left of the box to 25% of the width of the box to the right (or 100px from the left of the box) and also calculated the height of the box and top offset. I want to be able to say if the mouse leaves those dimensions, run a function.

Can I pass the dimensions and use mouseout or mouseleave? is this possible without using an HTML element?
