Pass Website Content Into Variable?
Mar 29, 2010
OK I'm terrible with Javascript so I'm hoping this is actually really easy for someone else. I need to have the content of a website passed into a variable. The website content that I need to get is simply a number. I've looked at a few different AJAX examples but I had a hard time understanding what was going on. Could someone show me an example that specifically passes website content into a variable. Nothing needs to be done to the content as it is in plain text without any code that needs to be stripped off or anything.

Can I pass the content of an id selector to a variable?I am using a jQuery plugin which passes some data to an id selector ('#alt-text'). If I create a div tag with that id, the content for ('#alt-text') gets displayed in the div tag- everything fine. However, I need to split the selector (or parse the selector) to the assign different sections of the data to differnt div tags.
can't seem to get this started. If I try:
var xxx = $('#alt-text');
$('#otherDivTag').html(xxx);
it does not work. My desire is to do something like:
var xxx = $('#alt-text');
$('#otherDivTag').html(xxx).text().split(' ')[0];

I start outside of the external JS file by: reviews.init(); reviews.initialiseContent('comment'); This loads my data and loads + sets the comment tab as default. My problem is that in the external JS file (shown below) the loadTabs variable will not allow me to pass it a variable: contentDiv.onclick = this.initialiseContent; Whenever I pass a variable here it errors, am I setting this up correctly, should I be using prototype for my this. variables? Interested to hear back on if this structure of code is the right way to go about this and also how I can pass a variable in this way :)

I was wondering if anyone knows how you would create a link when clicked will change the width of the content.
I have a feeling this will use jQuery?
E.g.
A link saying 'expand' will change the width of the body to 1000px and change the link to 'contract'.
When the link 'contract' is clicked it will change the width back to 800px and change the link to 'expand'

I have the following not working [code]....
I don't understand how to pass the currentId variable to the .addClass method as the above code does not work. If I replace currentId with 'id_1" it works. I also verified that currentId has actually an id value like this:
document.write(currentId);
but I'm really missing how to pass that variable.

If it is possible to pass a php variable through to a javascript function.
Example.
I have a bit more to the code but that is the bare essentials as an example. If i remove the $id and $name from the passTest() for onClick the function works properly. However if I leave them in the function doesn't seem to work at all.

I have this basic auto complete JavaScript that works well, but you need to hard code the web page. What I'm trying to do is send the "Autocomplete" variable data to the page using a perl script.the working JavaScript code looks like this:
var CustomArray=new Array('an apple','alligator','elephant','pear','kingbird','kingbolt','kingcraft','kingcup','kingdom','kingfish er','kingpin','SML');
Now the new code is: var CustomArray=new Array(Autocomplete);
And the Perl script is sending back the data to the browser looking like this:
var Autocomplete = 'an apple','alligator','elephant','pear','kingbird','kingbolt','kingcraft','kingcup','kingdom','kingfish er','kingpin','SML'
HTML:
<html>
<head>[code].....

I'm trying to overcome one feat, and I've just ran the course of my little knowledge of javascript. Here is the code that concerns us. code...
It gives me an undefined, right off the bat before any uploading, or anything at all takes place. I'm guessing this is because this value is set on page load, and not before the actual upload actually happens.
Does anyone have any ideas how I can set this value when the upload begins with the variable from the text file ? Keep in mind it has to be inside the function it's in now or it wont work.
Note that the loadXMLDocument function isn't called until the upload is complete, the .bind at the bottom of the page.
