One IE Window Update A Form In Another IE Window?
Jul 23, 2005
We have a web based tool used to report issues in our office. Many times the users do not enter the required information to deal with the issue. Unfortunately we don't have control of this application to update or modify it.
I would like to create another web based tool where users would fill out a form, click submit and the info from that form would be inserted to a specifically named textarea box in a separate IE window.
A couple of factors that would affect this...
- The URL of the reporting tool does contain form data. I'm not sure if this
would affect detection of the current address in the browser.
- The name/ID of the textarea/textbox that I want to paste to is always the
same.
- The only browser to consider is IE as this is an INTRANET application.
Are any of the following scenarios possible?
- User has reporting tool open in one window at the proper page to enter
info. In another window they have our new form. They click submit and our
page inserts information into the other page.
- Same as above, but user has a different page than the reporting page. Can
our form detect what page is showing in the other browser window and issue a
warning to the user, or cause the other page to move to the correct
reporting page?
- User only has our page open. When they submit the form it opens the
reporting page in the same window and updates, or in a frame in the same
window and updates?
.... This should explain pretty much what I'd like to accomplish.
Currently when the user submits on our form it just copies the contents of
our form to the clipboard and pops up an alert box telling the user to "now
please paste your clipboard in the the problem report." It works, but it's
not very elegant.

I found this forum while running out of ideas and being extremely desperate to fixing a probably small javascript error in a script. the script is supposed to open a small form window that allows the user to input an email address and update it to proceed. the form item is initially unchecked, but as the user clicks it and enter his email address, it updates the value of the email address and the box becomes "checkable". the problem is that with both IE and firefox, the box doesn't close again, doesn't get checkable and basically doesn't work. in the firefox debugging console, I found the following error:

The part responsible in the javascript for this section is:

And the html code that is supposed to pop up the box is:

I have a popup window which has the search form in. What I want to do is for the popup window to close once the form is submitted, and to post the form data to a page on the main window.
Is anyone able to advise. As the main page is dynamic, it is not possible to give the page a name.

This should probably be pretty basic and I've been googling around as to the best approach to take and still a bit confused. I have a form that currently submits a form to a new window using jquery (shown below.) The form once submitted could go through a few redirects within the new window (it's calling some facebook stuff.)
All I'd like is when the initial new window pops up is for a spinner to appear in the popup window until the first response is returned. Is there a decent example on how to do best achieve this?

I need to insert some text (keywords) into a searchform of another window. I assume this is possible via the window.opener, but I would be grateful for some hints.

The general outline is that I have part of a page that deals with the addition, editing and deletion of upcoming events. Data is stored in a MySQL table. The form design (in traditional terms) would be very simple requiring three fields, one for the Event Name, one for the Event Description and one (hidden) to identify the UniqueID of the event in the MySQL table. (As the reference to make edits.) The table therefore has 3 fields. (There are more such as Timestamp, clientID etc, but they are not important here.)
I envisage three functions, one to add, one to edit and one to delete the event listed on the page. I have 3 php files eventadd.php, eventedit.php and eventdelete.php which speak for themselves.However, this is where I have the problem. What I have been doing is returning the xmlhttpresponse as a formatted HTML page for the two 'form' elements because whilst I can return unformatted text containing the relevant fields in one response, I don't know how to break that down into two sections for the innerHTML of the two 'form' elements that change.
Returning a formatted page does work, but as well as being slower than neccessary, I am also running into character-set encoding issues and I just know that I am not doing this properly. I can supply code and things, but I have a feeling that this problem will have come up somewhere and probably has a recognized solution because to me it seems to be such an obvious requirement to be able to populate several form elements with fields from one recordset.

I have a page here [URL]. You can select a value from the dropdown list and you will get a list of configurations with the word "Select". If you click on the "Select" word you will get a pop-up value with a list of checkboxes. So what I want is that once they click on the checkbox the window will close and update the "Select" with the revelant "Tyre Serial No". How to achieve the updates? I also want to limit the pop-up window to only at any one time.

I am trying to usw window.open , upload a file in the child window and then referesh the parent window. But once upload is done, window . opener .location.href or opener.location.replace sends a message back but I get a pop up blocker, so if I turn pop up blocker off, it opens in new page. I just want the parent page to refresh on the same window. This works on some employees stations but not on others..I don't know if there are any settings on IE that need to change, I tried everything...weird. does any one done this before?

I am trying to pop up a window and then do stuff(set flags) when the content of the new window is done loading. For this I am trying to detect the window.onload of the pop-up child window but so far I am unsuccessful. I believe my problem is that the URL of child window is on different domain, than the one of the opener(parent) so that the window.onload is not being called. Though this may change, at the moment I do not have access to the code for the page I'm opening up in the pop-up. Im pretty new to web development.

from my main window. I would like them to always stay in front of the parent
window until they are shut down with there own close buttons. As it is, when
you click back to the parent window, of course it comes in front of the
child windows. Can I do this?

I need to open a popup window from a PHP site and pass in some parameters to use in the pop up window. I have the params in an input box and need to get the val of the box into a param and pass it to the new popup window. All pages are local and in the same folder. The id of the input box is 'ddutykey'. The name of the new window would be showduty.php if possible.

I'm having some difficulty in renaming a window object. I'm opening the window in question via a targetted submit:
<!-- CODE EXCERPT FROM WINDOW 1 -->
<form target="newWin">
Based on certain criteria, I sometimes need to close window 1 and have
window 2 take its name:
<!-- CODE EXCERPT FROM WINDOW 2 (currently named "newWin" -->
var strWindowName = opener.name;
opener.name = null;
opener.close();
//Ensure the window doesn't hold onto the instance
opener = null;
//Rename the window
window.name = strWindowName;
top.name = strWindowName;
While an alert at the end of my function indicates that the renaming
has been successful, when I submit the form on window 2 I find that
the window name has reverted to "newWin". For some reason however,
refreshing the window makes the correct (previous opener) name stick.
