I need to know how to open a pop up and close the main window without
a prompt in Firefox 2 and IE 7. Anybody have any ideas on how to do
that.
I currently have this and it works in IE 6 and Firefox 1.5:
function windowClose()
{
if(navigator.appName=="Microsoft Internet Explorer")
{
this.focus();self.opener = this;self.close();
}
else
{
window.open('','_parent',''); window.close();
}
}

I have one page with <select> list in it, which opens a popup with
another <select> list. Those two list are linked... When I select
something in the list that is in popup window and confirm the selection
(by pressing button), I call a function that fills the "parent" window
and forces popup to close. All this is accomplished by directly
accessing another list:
for(var i = 0; i <= selLength; i++){
name = parent.window.opener.listValues.options[i].text;
value = parent.window.opener.listValues.options[i].value;
self.document.form1.itemList.options[i] = new Option(name, value);
}
And this doesn't seem to work with IE. With Firefox is OK.
Any ideas how to make it work with IE?

From a parent window, I open two child windows.In the second child, you complete some data, and then it closes the window. I'm trying to figure out how to find and close the first popup window at the same time (as that is used for reference but no action necessary on it).As near as I can tell window.open should let me set a handle that I can then reference later on to close that window (or am I misunderstanding that), but i cannot figure out how to reference that window.

Is it possible to refresh a parent browser window when a "child"
browser window has been closed using the [X] button in the upper right
corner of the browser?
When I refer to child window, I mean that a link within a "parent" window has opened a new browser window.

I need some help with closing a popup window. I'm making an online portfolio,
that has one base page with text and thumbnails. When a user clicks on a thumb,
a new window opens containing a larger image and a caption (each contained on a
separate htm document). I do this with a function in the header script as follows:
var picpage=" ";
var params=" ";
function fullpicwin(picpage,params)
{
window.status="Opening picture... please wait";
window.open(picpage,'fullpic',params)
}
picpage (the name of the htm file), and params (window size, etc.) are passed
from the click code by each thumb. Each popup is sized differently, of course,
based on the side of the larger photo. All controls, etc., in the popup are
turned off. The user can click the "x" box or a form button at the bottom of
the popup to close the window.
All this works very nicely... EXCEPT...
The user can move the mouse back to the main page and open ANOTHER popup by
clicking on another thumb BEFORE closing the existing popup. The problem is the
2nd popup retains the size of the first, so of course the photo may be blocked
by the borders, etc.
What I want to do is force the closing of the first popup if the user tries to
open a 2nd and so on. There is no reason to have more than one large photo
showing at the same time.
I thought I could put some code in the function that checks for the existence
of a window named "fullpic", and if it's there, closes it first, then opens
another. But I can't seem to get the syntax right.

For some readon onClose kept popping in my head, but I'm pretty sure that's not correct.

Opening a link in the browser has to open a new window with same url content (url cannot be hardcoded)
and the opened window must close the parent window and should not have any of the status bar,url bar or menu bar.
I have written this code in a html page in the body onload event
var WIN_WIDTH = 700;
var WIN_HEIGHT = 500;
var MENUBAR_HEIGHT = 10;
var TOOLBAR_HEIGHT = 50;
var STARTUPBAR_HEIGHT = 10;
var heightOfBars = MENUBAR_HEIGHT + TOOLBAR_HEIGHT + STARTUPBAR_HEIGHT;
var xPos = (screen.width/2) - (WIN_WIDTH/2);
var yPos = (screen.height/2) - (WIN_HEIGHT/2) - heightOfBars;
var prop='menubar=no,scrollbars=no,status=no,locationbar=no,'+'toolbar=no,resizable=yes,width='+WIN_WIDT H+',height='+WIN_HEIGHT + ',left='+xPos+',top='+ yPos;
window.open (location.href,'EKMIS',prop);
//closes parent window without any confirmation
window.opener.opener=''
opener.window.close();
But the problem is opened window goes into unending loop..

How could I open a page/popup after closing one? The objective is to log the user out if they haven't Logged out or clicked Logout.
I am sure there is a simple way to do this. None of my ideas work.
The only answer I could come with (after testing the whole day...) IE(any version), Firefox, and other browsers don't support this idea, due to the fact that the user clicked close and you can't impose things on them.

I am calling a Java Script function on the button click of a pop up window (ASP.net). The function does the following:
1. Close the Popup window
2. Call JS function on the Parent window
3. Try to open another popup
I am able to close the popup window and call the js function on the parent window but I am not able to open the new window.
CODE:
window.close();
window.opener.clearfields();
window.open('MyExcel.xls');
I need to perform all these in one JS function.

I have spent the whole of last night looking for a reliable javascript that pops up a small (possibly centered) window when the user exits the site (for another site) and for when he/she closes the site's main window.
Has anybody come across or is aware of a script that does all the above?

I want to close a popup-window with the onBlur eventHandler.
function closeIt() {
setTimeout('window.close()',2000); }
<body onBlur="closeIt()">
html
</body>
There is a form on my page, and when a input-field gets focus, body looses focus and the window closes. That's not what I want. I want to close the window, if focus goes to another
window or application, but not when someone tries to fill that form.

With Firefox 1.5+, I used the following code to close a window/tab:
===
<html><head>
<script language="javascript" type="text/javascript">
function closeWindow() {
window.open('','_parent','');
window.close();
}
closeWindow();
</script></head><body></body></html>
===
Since I upgraded to Firefox 2.0, it does not work - the window/tab
stays open.
Any idea how I can "load a page" that would force a window/tab close?

I'm putting together a popup flash player that can be launched from a url posted on a board. The link goes to a landing page which executes an onLoad script that opens the popup, then closes itself, leaving the popup over the board. Works fine in IE, but in FF the landing page remains open behind the popup and over the board. It will not self.close, and can't be closed from the popup (close.opener). Leading theory is that a FF window cannot be closed with script if it was not opened with script, and I've somewhat confirmed this, but seems a simple thing and should be doable.

To enhance user experience on my site, I've moved a few page elements (well, the ads...) to the end of the page (in a hidden div) and when the page is loaded the content of such divs are copied to their appropriate location on the page. This makes the content load much faster and thus not delay the user.So what I did works perfectly with IE/Opera but th FireFox is causes the page to try and reload, which it never succeeds to and so we're stuck with a blank page. So yes, the problem is that there are document.write calls inside those divs which contain script but I cannot change it (google ads / ebay ads)I even tried to use setTimeout() to ensure the content is loaded (and can see that it is) but still when the move is done, the page tries to reload.
HTML side:

<div id="xxx_slot"></div>

I have a nonsecure page that calls a secure popup window to edit credit card info.
This is my popup code.
function popcc(url)
{
newwindow=window.open(url,'name','height=210,width=430');
if (window.focus) {newwindow.focus()}}
This is what I use to close the popup:
<input name="Close" type="button" id="Close" value="Close" onclick="opener.location.reload(); parent.close()">
The weird thing, is that this works when both pages are normal http. When the popup is is https it doesn't work any more. Ideas?

I am trying to reload the ASP.NET page in the parent window from a javascript in a submodal window. Now I don't want a straight reload as in window.top.location.reload() because the page was previously posted back and thus a warning will be displayed by the browser. I also tried window.top.location.href=window.top.location.href, but that doesn't seem to load a fresh copy of the page. Does it make a difference that the page in the parent window is AJAX enabled and the script that launched the submodal is in an UpdatePanel?

I wonder why firefox won't work with this script below, but it works on IE, Safari, and Chrome instead?
Code:
$(document).ready(function(){
$(window).resize(function(){
location.reload();

The reason to reload the page is to reload the google map when the window is being resized.
