Frame Re-sizing In Netscape 6
Aug 23, 2001
I am trying to get frame re-sizing to work in Netscape 6, using the following JavaScript function:
function bannerframesize()
{
if (!document.all)
{top.document.getElementById("cars_r_set").rows="40,*"}
else
{top.document.all.cars_r_set.rows="40,*"}
}
The document.all method works for IE4 & IE5/5.5 and the document.getElementById method works with IE5.5 (I've proved this, although in the above function the document.all would take precedence with IE5/5.5), but it does not work with Netscape 6 (I can read the rows property value using this method, I just can't write to it). I've tried using both top.document.... and parent.document....
My JavaScript Bible (by Danny Goodman) states that the getElementById should work with Netscape 6 and that one can read AND write the <FRAMESET> rows property in Netscape 6.

I have a page with 4 frames in it. If I click on a button in the 4th frame, a new window has to be opened and the value of the listbox in the 3rd frame hoas to be passed ....
My code works fine in IE, but doesn't in Netscape .....
First, the value of the listbox .... I try to get it with
parent.frame3.form.listbox.value ... But an alert of this (as a test)
does nothing .... I tried several combinations like parent.frames[2]
and parent.frames[frame3] but nothing happens ...
Another problem is that the frame4 is blanked ... strangely enough ...
I'm just doing window.open('blablabla');

I've been using pop-ups for some time now and I still can't figure out how to get the image to fit perfectly in the new window. There's always a few pixels of background showing and I have to increase the size of the window just to have the spaces around the image to even out. Is there any way to completely remove the vertical and horizontal spaces in pop-ups?

I've been trying to use HTML text that will scale up or down using the
Internet Explorer 6.0 menu ViewText Size. I'm using CSS to set the sizes
and weight.
When I use ViewText Size Medium and CSS the results are
Product line - font-size: medium - result bolded
Pricing line - font-size: small - normal
When I use ViewText Size with any size not medium and CSS the results are
Product line - font-size: medium - normal
Pricing line - font-size: small - normal
If I use font-weight bold for the Product Line I end up with double bolding
when ViewText is set to Medium.
This inconsistant behavior of bolding makes it hard to have consistant
looking fonts where the Product Line should be bolded.
If I use a set point size the text will not scale.
Is there a way of setting up fonts so that the results across the ViewText
Size options is consistant?

Is it possible in Javascript to Size an element to its contents?
I have resizable divs with overflow=auto, and I'd like to plot them initially with fixed width and at the minimum height which will avoid the appearance of y-scrollbars.
I would be fine if I could find the actual total length of the included document given the current width of the div. (Calculating it would seem to be difficult, given unknown wrapping algorithms, empty lines, etc.)
Or somewhat less fine, even if I could question whether there is overflow, or clipping, or whether scrollbars have been added to the div, given the current height.
I could then hack the height till the overflow or clip or scrollbars went away. (Yuk!)
But I can't find any css or other read-only properties I could query that would give me any of those values.
I assume that YOffset or scrollY wouldn't help, since they would be 0 when the bottom is clipped off. (I don't even know if they're even defined for divs.)
I haven't been able to find a "scroll Object" that would say whether the scroll bar is showing.

I am building a webpage built with a column on the left, a header, and a main iframe which is the main content of the page. The content of the main iframe can get to be long, and I want the iframe to resize its height to fit the content. I know javascript can do this. I have seen many live examples of it working online. My problem is when I try and use the code myself (even if I leave the live example pages unchanged, but just save them and run them offline) it doesn't work. That is, the iframes work, the page works, but the iframe doesnt fit it's content.
Now, the page that I'm building is fully offline right now and I don't know if my javascript will work just fine if hosted on a domain and accessed online, but as it is it's not working and I don't know why. As an example here is some code, and the page it was taken from

I am making a PHP-MySQL site which has an image gallery page that generates thumbnail-sized versions of images (the paths are all in the DB) using the width= tag. I have it so that when you click on the thumbnail, a fixed-size window pops up with the actual-sized version of the image. The new window just displays the image itself with .jpg in the address bar, and not an HTML or PHP file that contains the image tags and path in it. Is there any way I can have the new window automatically adjust to the size of the image, or is it strictly a one-size-fits-all dealy?

I am new to jQuery and not an experienced programmer. I downloaded the accordion widget and it works fine. I have one small problem: the content box instances 2 and3 onwards, seem to be sizing themselves depthwise to the size of the first content box and not dynamically to the number of lines of text I enter in each. Can I make it dynamic with alterations to the CSS? If so whichproperty do I alter and to what?

I didn't write much of this code, but basically, it opens an image in a new window. The problem is that the new window can either be the whole page, or a certain set size. I would like to make the window height and width determined not by a pixel number, but by a percentage of the size of the image I am opening in the new window.
here is the piece of code I think is pertinant.
// Strip file name from image src
var spath=targ.getAttribute('src');
wholePathLength=spath.length;
strippedPathLength=spath.substring(0,spath.lastIndexOf("/")).length;

I have a page where users click on a small thumbnail image to view a larger version of the image in a new window. But instead of just viewing the image file, I want them to view an HTML page that contains the image and a "Close Window" button. I know how to do that, and I know how to specify the size of the popup window. But...
What I'm trying to do is make the popup window just big enough for the image and the button, with perhaps a 10 pixel border around it. Since the images will vary in size, I can't hard code the width and height properties of the popup window. I need to have JavaScript measure the height and width of the image to calculate the dimensions for the popup window (and presumable this would have to be done before it opens the new window).

I have a domain: example.com; which is the parent.And a subdomain: api.example.com; which page 'receiver.html' is being loaded in an iframe, child of parent. Both pages set document.domain = example.com.
I'm trying to adapt this code:[url] but Idon't want to load jQuery from the <iframe> again but I need to have the method $.ajax() working from the <iframe> otherwise it would be a cross-domain request and the browser would abort it. I tried ingenuously to set via $('iframe')[0].contentWindow.$.ajax = $.ajax() and I just got a shortcut to the parent page jQuery method. I also tried to "clone" it using $.expand (true...) but the method doesn't work for me; probably because of the complexity of the objected I'm trying to clone. So is there a way for me to use jQuery to have only a $.ajax() method in the <iframe> ? I've thought even about creating a XHR in the child-iframe and then use that in the $.ajaxSetup ({xhr: THATNEWXHR}) but I couldn't do it. I mean, I want to use the XHR factory from jQuery (which has fallbacks for IE, etc) but it has to be created from the iframe-child.
Maybe there is other way to make the AJAX call come from the child-iframe.
If you're wondering "why don't you load jQuery from <script> in the child-iframe", there is a reason... As I'm using jQuery plugins + my own custom javascripts + other independent scripts I created a compiler which minifies each file and bundle them in one. The advantage of this is the reduction of HTTP requests. So "why don't you load that bundle inside the child-iframe?", because it's ugly and Twitter doesn't... Yeah, I like to take Twitter as a reference and I think if they were able to make it so can I;
I got to work in most browsers except IE and Operaby doing it with pure javascript.
I'm "attaching" the code for you guys to test. If you open it with Chrome, Safari or Firefox you will receive 2 alerts one with the return of $.get() and another with the return of a request made via XMLHttpsRequest object. Otherwise (if you open it with IE or Opera) you'll get 'undefined' in the first alert but the real return in the second.
This is the example.com/index.htm:

The back button will be on a small top frame and the page that needs to be controlled will be in the main frame.
The top frame is just a navigation system, and all pages will be loaded in the main frame.
Im trying to use this Code:
<FORM>
<INPUT TYPE="button"
NAME="back"
VALUE="BACK"
onClick="history.go(-1)">
</FORM>
Does anyone know how I could accoplish the desired result using this code, or any other code? And what about a foreward button?

I have a parent document that has a frameset with two frames in it. The first frame is a "header" that runs across the top of the site, and never changes. The second frame contains the "content" of the site. Essentially, I am trying to figure out how to prevent the header appearing above external sites when the user clicks an external link in the "content" frame.
Every time the content frame changes to a new URL, I would like the check that URL and determine if the content frame is changing to an external URL (i.e. different domain in URL) or to an internal link (same domain in URL). If the content is changing to an external link, I want to break out of the frame and just load that external link in the top most document.
I would like all of my javascript to be in the parent document, not spread throughout the individual pages of the site. I was trying to approach this by setting the onunload event handler of the content frame, but I am left with a couple of specific questions:
1. In handling an unload event, can you determine the next URL that the document is loading? Code:

I use dreamweaver mx html editor to make web sites. I think I know enough Html to get by. My new site uses a frame set so the head and controller don't change reload or move. This works nice, now all I have to do to make a new page is make the content page. But my problem is if I send out a link for someone to look at, it only loads the content page and not the frame set. I thought I could use javascript to determine if the frame set is present and if not load it. But I can't seem to find a way to sent variables from one frame to another. Also if a user clicks a link I would like my flash controller to reflect it.

One more question about manipulating iframes. In a script I've looked through to investigate AJAX file uploads, there is this technique for accessing the contents of an iframe:
Code:
if(frame.contentWindow)
{
var thebody = frame.contentWindow.document.body;
}else if(frame.contentDocument)
{
var thebody = frame.contentDocument.document.body;
}
I haven't been able to find much info on contentWindow and contentDocument. In fact, other sources I've found talk only about using contentWindow to access an iframe's contents, ignoring contentDocument completely. What is the difference between the two, and what browsers is the contentDocument check targeting? Any modern browsers, or is this a backward compatibility thing?

I am creating a site that will use a Client-Side Include (CSI) to dynamically generate an ad banner to be placed on the right hand side of the page. It loads great in IE5 and above and Netscape 7 and even loads fine in Netscape 4.7. The problem is when the user resizes the window, the ad banner that was generated is then placed at the bottom of the page. I even look at the HTML of that particular page and the CSI is thrown into the bottom portion of the site. I am perplexed as to how it just throws it down AND knows where in the HTML code to insert itself.
If anyone has any ideas on how to stop this snippet of code placing itself anywhere in the site, I would appreciate any help. Again, it LOADs fine but when the user decides to re-size the window, it just moves it down to the bottom of the site.
