I'm trying to write a script that checks for when the enter button is pressed in a textarea and then appends a <br />. I have this:
function appendBreak (field, event) {
var keyCode = event.keyCode ? event.keyCode : event.which ? event.which : event.charCode;
if (keyCode == 13) {
document.formName.inputName.value = document.formName.inputName.value + '<br />'
alert('Captured Enter Key');
}
else
return true;
}
And in the particular element that i want to call this function I have this attribute. onkeypress="return appendBreak(this, event)
This code will work on regular text type inputs (i.e. <input type="text"....>). But I was having trouble identifying the value of a textarea.
This is what I currently have:function appendBreak (field, event) {
var keyCode = event.keyCode ? event.keyCode : event.which ? event.which : event.charCode;
if (keyCode == 13) {
//this.value = this.value + '<br />'
alert('whats up?');
It shows that what I am calling is undefined. But it does append the <br /> after the undefined. So if I could just locate the <textarea> value then I'd be okay.
Anyways I have a textarea that I have managed through the magic of google to have the default text clear out with the onfocus and if the textarea is left blank to put the default text back in with onblur. I now have a new problem that is a little CSS and a little JS I suppose. I want the default text in the textarea to be grey and the user submitted text to be black. I know it is possible because... well facebook has it.
I'm working on a text editor with simple BBCode tags, like . It works perfectly in firefox and chrome, but not in Internet Explorer.
The js function in question:
Do we even have a selection?
The variable textArea is, of course, a <textarea>.
I call this function with the onclick event of a button, like this:
In Chrome and FF, clicking the button inserts the tags, just as it should. In IE, nothing happens.
I have another js function that formats the text and displays it, which works in all browsers. No idea why this doesn't. Any reason this wouldn't work in IE? Anything I can do to make it work?
How would i change back to the default length of textarea?
I have this comment area that after clicking submit i will append the new comment in the list of comments through ajax... i got one problem though, everything is working perfectly well except for the textarea that won't change back to it's default size...
EXAMPLE:
The problem is that the textareawon't change back to it's default size // let's say that the default size is rows=3
I currently have a normal link like Code:<a href="http://sitepoint.com" class="link">sitepoint</a> and when a user clicks on it I want to be able to change the "link" class to a different class. However, I don't want to add anything to the actual link html. Is it possible to do this using javascript without modifying the original link code?
I am trying to dynamically clear the value of a form input field and then submit the form.When I used $('#my_field').val('') to clear the field, it was cleared on the screen but when the form was submitted the original value of the input field was posted.My browser is FireFox and I can see using FireBug that when the field is cleared, firebug is still showing the html code with the old value. E.G. <input type="text" value="old_value" />The same situation occurred if I used $('#my_field').attr('value', '') to clear the field.The same situation occurred if I actually changed the value of the field rather than just clearing it.To work around this problem I ended up using the $('#my_field').removeAttr('value') to clear the field before it was submitted.
I am a complete novice when it come to Javascript. I copied the script for displaying random images at a specific interval (from javascriptkit.com). I would appreciate knowing whether the following is possible:
The pages are based on tables, so the parts that change are all cells.
1. Can I define text instead of an image in the array? i.e. can I have the image change to say an apple in one cell and the next cell have text explaining what an apple is?
2. Would it be possible to put a countdown timer for when the image/text is going to change?
Ive got a small image of a power button and when pressed the inner section on the button changes to yellow, but when its pressed down Im also trying to get part of my H1 (main header logo title) to change to yellow.
Ive created a span with an id surrounding the letters of the H1 that I want to change, the id being : "power";
The javascript that I have come up with so far and works is as follows:
<img id="poweron" src="http://www.sitepoint.com/forums/images/power.png" alt="Power on button" onmousedown="this.src='images/poweron.png';" onmouseup="this.src='images/power.png';"/>
I understand Im not really supposed to be using inline JS, and I know Ive got to create a function for the onmousedown event to trigger changing the H1 text, so am I under the right impression that the JS so far written is redundant and will have to be re-written so thats contained within a script placed just before the closing </body> and an external script for invoking the main function ?
I've got this little 'textarea' script..see the code below. Now there is something strange with it. When I disable javascript from within IE 6.0, it still seems to function well... how come ?
Also I would like to build in one thing extra.. Whenever one of the buttons B or C is pressed there is a tag placed within the textarea, like it should. However I don't want the tags to be counted up to the textcount total. What do I need to adjust in the code to achieve that ? Code:
how to make a DIV into a textarea. I've noticed that Facebook does this and so does a lot of Google's stuff. Just looking to see how they pull that off.
really need some help with validating a textarea box. basically i have a text area box that must not have more the 910 characters entered and they must not be spread over more than 23 lines. I could check the total length but the problem is people could enter 1 character per line so you would end up with 910 lines.
Is there a way to detect which textarea the cursor is positioned in? I would not want to attach 'onkeypress' to all textareas to detect which one I am presently in ... or is this the only option?
I need to create a page that allows users to copy the contents of a MS Word document and paste them into a textarea. All fine and dandy...but the tabs. I don't need to keep the formatting, just the tabs. Is there any way to detect the tabs and change them to four spaces or something similar? If you have any other ideas please let me know.
I'm using a third party libray and I can drag a diveand resize it. The issue is, I have a textarea inside of it and I need to resize the width of textarea and height of textarea along with it.
I know what the width and height of the div will be when it finishes dragging (in "px"), so how do I convert the width and height in "px" to the cols and rows of a textarea?
I have a variable, divs, which contains the DIV's and divs[x] contains the actual DIV I need.
What is the best (or most robust) way to access the inner textarea - because I want to add some text to the textarea field. I know how to add the text but want to know best way to access the textarea.
I have used a textarea to display typewriter effect text. The scrollbars are displayed by default. What is the code to disable the scrollbars in a textarea form field? < scrolling="no"> does not seem to work.
I have a button next to a textarea when they click that button it launchs another window. Now I need another button that will take a value (it will be an html code) close that window, and put that value in the textarea.
Sort of like how when you click the link button in this wysiwyg editor it pops up a window that asks for some stuff and then inserts it here.
I'm using this to write html tag in me textarea. Now i'm wondering what code do i need to use so that text cursor stays in textarea after i click on the button so that i don't have to click back to textarea every time i press button. Code:
Quick script I threw together a while back. Mimics the AutoCorrect behaviour of MS Word. The list of corrections was exported from MS Word via some obscure macro that I have since lost.
Has worked in all browsers I've tested with save Netscape Navigator.
