Changing Cookies Location
Jan 12, 2006Is it possible to change the storage place or location for a specific cookie of a local HTML file? Or to prevent it from being erased anytime?

View 1 Repliesi have a document that places, reads cookies, and counts visits. it's design is to display text reading: "you have visited this site "x" times. this works fine - last week's assign. My assignment this week is to modify this document to display 4 images in succession. first, using a series of "if" statements within the body. next, is to replace if statements with switch statement. finally, to use an array to display images. i've been working on this for a week, and have made seemingly no progress. this is my starting point:

I'm just starting to learn languages like jQuery, PHP and AJAX. I will post exactly what a potential client asked me. I'm not willing to say no, because everything else he asked I can do myself, but if it's far beyond my capabilities, I may have to just hire someone to code this part.
Quote: For our home page main menu bar, we would like to have a script (that we design) that if it recognizes a cookie, it shows a slightly different menu bar than if it doesn't see our cookie. For instance, if a user is "remembered" we want the menu to have a support button visible, if the user isn't remembered by our script, its button would then be "Free Trial" I understand exactly what he wants, just not sure how best to go about it. I believe I've seen this before, and I thought maybe AJAX was the best way to do it, but please, correct me if there is a much easier way.
I figure it's a matter of just showing and hiding an object in a kind of IF / ELSE situation.
Is there any way to change the contents of the location bar, such as to add something like "?c=1" to the end of the url, without causing the web page to reload itself?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a problem with IE and location.hash. If I change the hash, the history doesn't "update" and it only keeps one record of the URL. This whole website is AJAX-driven and I need the user to be able to use the forward and back buttons in the browser. Everything works fine and dandy, tested on all the major browsers on PC and Mac, except for IE (both 6 and 7).
In case I wasn't clear, here's a way to reproduce in IE6/7:
Go to google.com
Go to yahoo.com#one
Go to yahoo.com#two
Click back. You'll be back to google.com instead of yahoo.com#one
Here is what I have: a regular main window that opens a small pop-up for preview purposes. This pop-up window has a text link to close it and a text link to close it and reach a page with more detail in the main window. I have been trying an infinite number of things so far and I cannot get this last link to work in Opera 10. All workarounds are just fine in FF 3 and IE 8. Here is the function called when clicking the link to "close and go":

I am writing a modification to Invision Power Board that makes replying to post via Ajax.
The "Submit" button is being overrun by Prototype's observe function. When the custom function is executed, I run Event.stop(e) to prevent the actual form from being submitted and reload the page.
I have developed and tested on Safari but users began to report bugs in IE, after investigation I discovered that the line
Code:
Is making IE execute all the code after it, and then execute its own onclick() function as if Event.stop(e) was not there. Commenting this line fixes the problem, the page is not reloaded, but this line is vital to the code.
So why do I need to set the anchor? To support the back button function after a user makes an ajax reply, pressing Back should hide the new content, and pressing Forward should make it visible. (e.g. every time the anchor is changed) This all works nicely. But not in IE.
This only happens the first time the page is visited ever, or clearing cache and visiting it again. Reloading the page fixes the problem but this is not normal behavior and users shouldn't have to reload to use the Ajax fast reply...
I'm using a service to remotely create a pdf - it creates a pdf of the page you're on. Unfortunately that includes the link as well. I'd like to push the pdf generator to a slightly different url which would remove the offending link. The link I have is:

but it is not fooled! It seems I need to edit location.href but I don't know how to do it!!
Danged if I can find the thread, but I swear I saw a $.url() reference in here a day or two ago. It was beingutilized for parsing out the window.location or window.location.search parameters. I made a mental note because that was something I would be needing to do.
Now I can't find it, either because the search isn't finding it or I was dreaming about this function existing.
I rummaged about the API docs and didn't find it there either. Is it something provided by one of the plugins and not a function native to jQuery?
I currently have a normal link like Code:<a href="http://sitepoint.com" class="link">sitepoint</a> and when a user clicks on it I want to be able to change the "link" class to a different class. However, I don't want to add anything to the actual link html. Is it possible to do this using javascript without modifying the original link code?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am trying to dynamically clear the value of a form input field and then submit the form.When I used $('#my_field').val('') to clear the field, it was cleared on the screen but when the form was submitted the original value of the input field was posted.My browser is FireFox and I can see using FireBug that when the field is cleared, firebug is still showing the html code with the old value. E.G. <input type="text" value="old_value" />The same situation occurred if I used $('#my_field').attr('value', '') to clear the field.The same situation occurred if I actually changed the value of the field rather than just clearing it.To work around this problem I ended up using the $('#my_field').removeAttr('value') to clear the field before it was submitted.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am a complete novice when it come to Javascript. I copied the script for displaying random images at a specific interval (from javascriptkit.com). I would appreciate knowing whether the following is possible:
The pages are based on tables, so the parts that change are all cells.
1. Can I define text instead of an image in the array? i.e. can I have the image change to say an apple in one cell and the next cell have text explaining what an apple is?
2. Would it be possible to put a countdown timer for when the image/text is going to change?
Ive got a small image of a power button and when pressed the inner section on the button changes to yellow, but when its pressed down Im also trying to get part of my H1 (main header logo title) to change to yellow.
Ive created a span with an id surrounding the letters of the H1 that I want to change, the id being : "power";
The javascript that I have come up with so far and works is as follows:
<img id="poweron" src="http://www.sitepoint.com/forums/images/power.png" alt="Power on button" onmousedown="this.src='images/poweron.png';" onmouseup="this.src='images/power.png';"/>
I understand Im not really supposed to be using inline JS, and I know Ive got to create a function for the onmousedown event to trigger changing the H1 text, so am I under the right impression that the JS so far written is redundant and will have to be re-written so thats contained within a script placed just before the closing </body> and an external script for invoking the main function ?
For all those "Cookie Problems" posts that are flooding this Forum:
function cookie(name,value)
{ this.name = name;
this.value = value;
this.attributes = new Array();
this.expiresIn = function (days)
{ expiration = new Date();
expiration.setTime(expiration.getTime() + (days*86400000));
this.attributes["expires"] = expiration.toGMTString();
};
this.set = function ()
{ var cookiestr = this.name + "=" + escape(this.value);
for(attr in this.attributes)
{ cookiestr += "; " + attr
if(this.attributes[attr].length > 0)
cookiestr += "=" + this.attributes[attr];
}
document.cookie=cookiestr;
};
this.erase = function()
{ this.expiresIn(-1);
this.set();
delete cookies[this.name];
};
}
function cookieContainer()
{ this.add=function (name,value)
{ this[name]=new cookie(name,value);
};
this.get=function (name)
{ for(o in this)
if(o == name)
return this[o];
return null;
}
var cstr=document.cookie;
var spaces=/s/gi;
cstr=cstr.replace(spaces,'');
while(cstr.length>0)
{ cequal=cstr.indexOf("=");
if(cequal==-1) cequal=cstr.length;
var name=cstr.substring(0,cequal);
cstr=cstr.substring(cequal+1,cstr.length);
cend=cstr.indexOf(";");
if(cend==-1) cend=cstr.length;
var value=unescape(cstr.substring(0,cend));
cstr=cstr.substring(cend+1,cstr.length);
this.add(name,value);
}
}
var cookies = new cookieContainer();
If I create a cookie in PHP here.
setcookie('cookie_cl_'.$client_id, 'cookie_cl_'.$client_id, $time, "/","", 0);
the php script is set on domain B
the javascript I want to read the cookie is set on domain B as well
However, the
hosted on DOMAIN A <script src=domain B .js>
I want the cookie to remain on domain B, but if I open the JS file using domain A, both php and JS are using domain B, though I can't seem to get the JS to find the cookie, is it looking at domain A ?
am I suppose to set a domain on cookie for this to work?
i am about to write my first javascript for a Login "remember me
cookie"...but i will say i am not sure of what method?
i dont want to save user id and password.....
I need to set two cookies. One to be used for redirection and page loading,
which i have now and works and a second one that is used to write
information on a page.
Both are to be set automatically when loading the page. The second will
will set a company name like "Your company name". Then when the next page
is loaded it will put "Your company name" on the webpage. And like I said
before the first cookie is set for navigation purposes.
What's the trick to sharing cookies between frames? I can set and read a
cookie in the same frame, but if I try to read the cookie in another frame
it is undefined. :o(
There are some other cookies that are available in all frames, so I know
that the frames are capable of reading cookies, just not the ones that I set
in the other frame.
Got a client with three web sites. I want to be able to pass cookies between these sites, so far no luck. Tried:
document.cookie = name + "=" + escape (value) +
((exp == null) ? "" : ("; expires=" + exp.toGMTString())) +
((path == null) ? "" : ("; path=" + path)) +
("; domain=.yorktest.com") +
((secure == true) ? "; secure" : "");
Code:
I have the code below that will retrieve a cookie that was placed by the server (ie: joes.com) that the document resides on. I want to be able to retrieve a cookie set by another server (ie: freds.com) but I want to retrieve it from a page served by joes.com. This code apparently using 'document.cookie' determines the server that the document resides on and looks for cookies from that server. Anybody know of code that will let you determine the server?
var name = "cookie";
function getCookie(name) {
var cname = name + "=";
var dc = document.cookie;
if (dc.length > 0) {
begin = dc.indexOf(cname);
if (begin != -1) {
begin += cname.length;
end = dc.indexOf(";", begin);
if (end == -1) end = dc.length;
return unescape(dc.substring(begin,
end));
}
}
return null;
}
I am using IE6 to view pages from a corporate web server through
internet, not VPN. But, the I use a webhop service, so the URL I use is
silently redirected to another place. I think this is because the
company uses dynamic IP addresses for the server.
Anyway, I am trying to use a cookie to remember user login info, but
the cookie is not working. If connect to the server through the VPN
(when I know the IP address of the server) everything works fine. So, I
am thinking that the webhop thing is causing me a problem with cookie.
Reading about the cookie I think that either the path or the domain
needs setting. Am I on the right lines here, or is it something else?
I use Javascript cookies in a web application with a command like this
document.cookie = NameOfCookie + "=" + escape(value) +
((expiredays == null) ? "" : "; expires=" + ExpireDate.toGMTString());
But it does not work in some cases that I dont understand ...
Some know how can i pull out a none English string from a cookie?

I'm displaying a page outside my server inside an iframe. I want to allow whatever is inside my iframe to set cookies. The website says, sorry your browser must allow cookies. My browser allows cookies, but because its in the iframe it doesn't allow them. I've read something about changing the header? What code would I put in my page.php to allow them?
