CGI - Frontpage Extensions; Online Forms
Dec 17, 2000
I have been using Frontpage to design web sites and know that online-forms can be created using Frontpage, but the host must have Frontpage Server Extensions installed...
...I was wondering if the online forms were simply CGI scripts??
If so, could i not get DreamWeaver Ultra Dev and write the CGI scripts in there? - I think DreamWeaver is capable of this?
Therefore, if a server supported CGI scripts and i had to pay extra for FRONTPAGE EXT. then i could bypass this problem by using CGI scripts...
...does this make sense? If not, why not?

Anyone here use FrontPage? I've been thinking of using Frontpage to
take my web site, www.dennisallen.com, and go frameless. Since I have a
left framed frame.htm with lots of javascipt code, is this a good idea?
I could use FP insert/components/web page to add my frame.htm page to all
other pages. But frame.htm has lots of javascript functions in the header,
and needs onload= to start them. I suppose I could move my <script> code
into the <body>. What are the advantages/disadvantages of <head> script
code as opposed to <body> script code?
Side question. Many of my pages have external <script src="temp.js"> calls.
In fact, a couple of pages I have to create a <body onload="xload()"> in
which xload() checks to make sure all the temp.js functions are loaded
before proceeding. Now it seems to me that the FP insert/component/page
could bypass this need altogether, but insert/component/page only asks for
*.htm files. What, do I want to convert my *.js files to *.htm files,
wraping <html><body><script></script></body></html> around them?

I've been researching the whole night (and now early morning) on how to disable the Edit With Microsoft Office FrontPage (draw-down of File) feature to no avail even though I know it is possible. To confront the nay-sayers, here's proof-positive evidence: [URL]. On the above site, and virtually all clear channel company radio sites, when you click down on File, you'll see that Edit With Microsoft Office FrontPage is disabled.
I read that you are to type the following in the code, but it has not worked for me:
<meta http-equiv="editable" content="dream-on"/>
Found on [URL]
Again, this does not work for me. Maybe I inserted it wrong? Where is the above <meta line supposed to be inserted in the code view of the web page?
The other incidental issue I have that I'd like to address is this: I found that a web site, naturalhandyman.com, has an extraordinary html encryption protection system: In the DESIGN VIEW, mind you, of his site on FrontPage, not the code view, all of his content is blocked out, replaced with a phrase such as, "[../_private/iipbotter.html]." HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE? I'd like something like this! Do you know what he used? Also is he using a particular type of encryption software because it seems his search rank is not being affected at all?

I'd like to announce release 1.0.7 of JNEXT (JavaScript Native
Extensions). JNEXT is an open source framework for securely accessing
the full range of native OS resources (files, databases, sockets etc.)
by using JavaScript from within a Web Page. It is light weight, cross
platform, cross browser and designed with simplicity in mind....

Does anybody know of a good firefox extension tutorial?
Basically I have an XML list of things
<term>bleh</term>
<replacement>blehsky</replacement>
and I want to make the extension replace every occurance of bleh on the webpage with blehsky.
I can handle the javascript to do this, but I don't know where to start in making it into an extension.

I'm trying to create an extensible class with private members.
Suppose I have the following:
Code:
Obviously, only "y" should be available to instantiations:
Code:
But how can I now extend this class and still access the private properties inside the extension?
Code:
How do I access x there? The someOtherFunction extension is part of the prototype, so it should be in the same scope as someFunction, no?

I couldn't find a single thread with the creme de la creme of String prototype extension methods, so I figured I'd start one. Here we go!
String.prototype.lTrim = function () {
return this.replace(/^s+/gm, "");
}
String.prototype.rTrim = function () {
return this.replace(/s+$/gm, "");
}
String.prototype.trim = function () {
return this.rTrim().lTrim();
}Obviously, this one's easy to understand. I'm using multi-line mode so as only to get rid of spaces and tabs before and after words. Single-line mode would replace any newline/carriage return characters as well.
String.prototype.capitalize = function () {
return this.replace(/[a-z]/g, function (str, n) { return str.toUpperCase(); });
}
String.prototype.toCamelCase = function () {
return this.replace(/s[a-z]/g, function (str, n) { return str.toUpperCase(); });
}
String.prototype.unCamelCase = function () {
return this.replace(/[A-Z]/g, function (str, n) { return " " + str.toUpperCase(); });
}This is something I needed today, to turn a camelCased variable value into its Header Format. While I was at it, I wrote the un-do-er.

for(var i = 0; i < extension.length; i++) {

return false;
}}

When introducing custom functionality to HTML elements we either use existing attributes to pass configuration parameters (like beetle's fValidate (http://www.peterbailey.net/fValidate/)) or invent our own (like my Tooltips (http://www.vladdy.net/webdesign/ToolTips.html)). While this method is ok for small amount of configuration information, it is not that flexible (you need to edit DTD) and becomes combersome when large amount of configuration parameters is needed.
I figured a more convinient way is to use a CSS like string to pass configuration parameters:
<div myextension="parameter1: value1; parameter2-subparameter1: value2.1; parameter2-subparameter2: value2.2"> </div>
Then initialization routine would contain:
if(myExtensionParameters = divElement.getAttribute('myExtension'))
divElement.myExtension = new myExtensionObject(divElement,myExtensionParameters);
Definition of possible parameters and their values can be done using an array of regular expressions:
myExtensionParamDefenitions = new Array();
myExtensionParamDefenitions['choiceparameter'] = /^s*(value1a|value1b|value1c)s*$/;
myExtensionParamDefenitions['stringparameter'] = /^s*(w+)s*$/;
myExtensionParamDefenitions['integerparameter'] = /^s*(d+)s*$/;
Constructor for the myExtensionObject would containd a parseParameters function:
function myExtensionObject(divElement,myExtensionParameters)
{ this.params=new Array();
parseParameters(this.params,myExtensionParamDefenitions,myExtensionParameters);
//Verify parameter initialization, if you like
str=''
for(e in this.params) str+= e + ': ' + this.params[e] + '
'
alert(str);
//Do whatever you have to do...
}
Function parseParameters has the following code:
function parseParameters(object,definitions,parameters)
{ paramEntries = parameters.split('');
for(var i=0; i<paramEntries.length; i++)
{ paramEntry = paramEntries[i].split(':');
if(paramEntry.length == 2)
{ paramName = paramEntry[0].replace(/^s*([w-]+)s*$/,'$1');
if(definitions[paramName])
{ res = definitions[paramName].exec(paramEntry[1]);
if(res[1])
object[convertCSSName(paramName)] = res[1];
}
}
}
}
Where convertCSSName function converts CSS type name (background-image) to javascript name (backgroundImage)
function convertCSSName(cssName)
{ sn = cssName.split('-');
rs = sn[0];
for(var i=1; i<sn.length; i++)
rs += sn[i].replace(/^(w)(w*)$/,function(str,p1,p2,offset,s){return p1.toUpperCase() + p2;})
return rs;
}
As a result you have params array of myExtensionObject object populated with validated entries. Changes and expansion is done by simply editing myExtensionParamDefenitions array.
PS: The functions are coded more for clarity rather than for brevity - I'm certain there are ways to improve the implementation.

how to add forms in javascript, but it's limited to text input forms.
<script type="text/javascript"><!--
function updatesum() {
document.form.sum.value = (document.form.sum1.value -0) + (document.form.sum2.value -0);
}
//--></script>
Where the inputs sum1 and sum2 are text fields you put whatever numbers you want in. That works fine. Great. Now what I'm having trouble with is modifying the code so that it will add one form with an input number with a form that spits out a randomly generated number.
<input type="button" value="D20" onclick="this.form.display.value = Math.round (20 * Math.random())" class="buttonHi" />Â <input name="display" type="text" size="6" value="" />
This is what I'm using for my random number generator. So basically I want to be able to put, say, 5, into the input text field above this. And then click on the d20 button to get a random number, say, 15, and then have the first code add the inputted 5 with the randomly generated 15.

I have the source code to an old BASIC program that a friend of mine
would like to run online. I am a beginner at JS, but I think that it
would be a good choice for the project. My background is in C/C++ and
web development.
Any suggestions that might get me off to a good start here? I can
provide more information if needed, but I am not sure what would be
helpful. The program is 550 lines in what appears to be BASIC and is a
calendar conversion program. You give it a date and it will convert it
into one of many other date reckoning systems (Gregorian, Hebrew,
Egyptian, etc, etc).

I am considering writing an online graphing utility. I plan it to be
of good quality, such that an undergraduate university student can
print it out and include it with a lab report.
Data points will be entered, having been generated by another program;
the utility will NOT accept functions for plotting--just the data
points.
As far as I know, Javascript does not provide graphing functionality.
Could somebody in this group please let me know what the best language
to use for writing this utility.

I am very new to web development. I would like my website to have an application which allows a user to draw images which can be displayed on other users screens in real time.
An example of this is isketch.net Also on this site i would like users to be able to create accounts and join 'rooms' where they can communicate in real time (as opposed a forum message board). I am looking for something similar to isketch.net
Could somebody please tell me the type of development and programming needed. I have been quoted 1000 a month to build these capabilities but have no idea what is involved. (also may require facebook style real-time updating)

I have been looking for the answer for a long time, but could not reach to any answer. I am a novice web designer, have very little knowledge on web programming. I hope someone here could help me with the following. The problem scenario is this:
I have a webpage where I have listed some classical songs so that page visitors can listen to song online. All files are in Real Audio format either with .rm or .ra extension. These individual audio files are linked with .ram files so that when visitor’s clicks on the song title, this .ram file launches RealPlayer and the clicked song starts playing. Once a song is played it stops. If user wants to hear another song, user needs to click on another song title to play that song. This is annoying for users.
However, I have seen on some websites where user can select the songs by clicking on the “Check Boxes next to each song titles and play by clicking on the “Play button. Therefore, user can select lists of their favourite songs by clicking on check box and play these together one after another. There are two other buttons also available for users: “Select All songs and “Reset.

i have this site everything works perfect offline(local) but when i put it on my server theres a few things that mess up. What isnt working.. I have a little readmore link beside a main quote on everypage and this uses ceebox to open it. Within this lightbox it shows an html page that i made with just a little write up, at the bottom is a little nav and onclick it should be opening the corresponding hidden div while closing the lightbox. this works offline perfect, i cant seem to figure out why it wont once uploaded. I have gone over all folder names, etc and im positive this isnt the problem. this is the main page html snippet with the read more link
Code:
<div id="header-fade">
<div class="header_paragraphs panel" id="header-1" style="z-index: 0;">
<div class="header_p_1"><p class="header-p">AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA</p></div>
<div class="header_p_2"><p class="header-p">AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA</p></div>

<div class="header_p_4"><p class="header-p">AAAAAAAAA</p></div>
</div><!-- Header P's -->
