Absolute Positioning & Retrieving Height
May 14, 2007
I'm trying to get the height of an element that contains content which is absolutely positioned. As far as I can tell, because the absolute positioned content is taken out of the page flow, you cannot retrieve the 'visible' height (ie height as seen onscreen) of the element with properties like clientHeight / offsetHeight.
Is there any way to access the visible height of an element like this?

How do I put "cont" div on the right of "leftmenu" without using "absolute"?? The screenshot was little bit cropped out and there is no problem on width.

I am trying to create a menu system.
The mainmenu is a table
<table><tr><td>menu1</td><td>menu2</td></tr></table>
No I try insert the submenu so that it becomes relative to the main menu
item. For menu1 the relevant code then becomes:
<td style="position:relative;">menu1<div style="position:absolute; top:20;
left:0;">
<a href=x.htm>option1</a><br>
<a href=y.htm>option2</a>
</div></td>
This works fine in IE: the div is positioned relative to the td of menu1.
However, in Mozilla it doesn't work. The div becomes relative to the top of
the page.
What am I doing wrong?

The following works in IE, but not in firefox:
document.getElementById('mydiv').style.left = event.clientX + document.body.scrollLeft;
document.getElementById('mydiv').style.top = event.clientY + document.body.scrollTop;
Any ideas why?

I am working on a puzzle that produces a container div.Within that div are produced a grid of 9.16. or 25 tiles.The tiles are positioned absolutely so I can be sure of their relative placement. The container div width and height is calculated according to a preset tile width and height (square actually). So the width of the container should adjust to either 3,4 or 5 tile widths and heights.The trouble is that the offset position of the top left tile is different relative to the container for each different set of tiles (even though it is supposed to be the same position relative to the container for each). I do this so I can apply dragging to the container div.The tiles will follow the container when it is moved and the game will not loose its place when tiles swap locations.(one tile is elected as blank, and tiles, one to left, right, top
or bottm, with game content, will swap location with blank when clicked)

I'm just figuring out how to use absolute inside a relative element to shift an image without changing the flow of the rest of the html. It's working for Firefox 4, but not IE 9.
In firefox the div element doesn't cause a hole in the flow. The div and the image inside is simply moved over to where they should be. But in IE, the image is sitting there as part of the flow bumping down the next things (the text and span tags) and the image isn't moving over to the right at all.
I've tried wrapping the div in an another div but that made no difference. Am I crazy to think this is supposed to work? I'm inserting the div and image tags dynamically in the client in javacript.

I place items at absolute locations on my LONG window.
When I scroll the window My Absolute is only relative to the Viewing
Area and tends to move up as i scroll my window.
Is this the normal behaviour ?
I need to have my item fixed to the bottom right hand corner no matter
what is happening to the window, including scrolling.

I am in need of a JS script that matches the "li" height with the un-defined height of a absolute positioned block? Sort of like a matching columns script - is this possible? It's for IE6! Oh ya, and it's dynamic un-defined height. I only want it to match the height on hover. Here is a little test page I put together.[code]

Because of the nature of my page, I would like to animate a div from a fixed postion when someone first visits the site to an absolutely position location using after clicking a menu item using .animate and the easing effects. This part seems to work fine, however, when I click on the "home" button again, the div will not move back to the original fixed position. The div just sticks to the top of the page. My assumption is that the .animate scriptdoesn't' know how to interpret/find the fixed position location. Is there a way to make this work?

I've encountered a strange problem with Firefox which I don't have any
idea how to resolve. To the point: I've <divelement with a style
"height: auto" and I want to retrieve this value ("auto") in
JavaScript - however instead of getting "auto" value, I get calculated
height. In IE and Opera it simply returns "auto".

I am working on a UI that, when you click on a menu option, a div opens and show three divs inside. These divs all have different
heights. The heights are based on the divs content.The problem I'm having is... how do I measure what the divs height should be? IE, how do I grab the height for a div BEFORE it has had any style applied to it.

how to adjust the iframe height by itself if my html height increases. My html code includes a facebook comment at the bottom of my page and the comment will show making it expand the height once users post comments. On the other hand, I'm using a CMS that have its own iframe. I've tried many solutions that can be found on the web but none works. It only can work if I don't put in CMS. Is it possible to adjust the iframe height using CMS or there is no way?

How can I use JavaScript to dynamically re-size a DIV on a page so that the div extends vertically to the size of the page or document.
Example: As the page gets longer due to contents, the DIV will also extend to the bottom of the page.
I have been experimenting all evening with different methods, some don't even work.

I have a rather annoying problem with Mac IE 5.2. I use a javascript
function to determine the x, y position of the upper left corner of
this image of the US. Since this image can be placed anywhere in the
browser, the x, y position is not always (0,0). I am also trying to
lay several dot images on top of this image so that when you click the
dot the user can find out more information about certain states. So I
determine the x, y position and add certain pixels so that the dots
will be placed in the correct places in relation to the US image.
This works well with PC's IE. However, when I open this in Mac IE, the
dots are either shifted too high up or too low in relation to the US
image. Strange thing is, when I resize the browser, the dots literally
jump to their correct places.

text over the top of them. The problem i'm having is that the positions
aren't correct. If I wrap the code in PRE tags, then this fixes it. But
this seems to be a bit of a hack, as apposed to finding what the bug is.
I've included examples of the problem below:

I was wondering if it is possible to set the positioning of an element in CSS? What I am looking to do, is have a set of 3 boxes on the right of the page and base the size of the boxes by %. Problem is, while I can position the first and third boxes relative to the top and bottom of the page, repectively, depending on the size of the browser, i can't firmly set the positioning for the middle box off of the top or bottom.
Ideally, I would like to use JS to determine the height of the first box (which is based on a % of the page size), and then set the top of the second box = the height of the first box + 5px for a buffer. Code:

I'm trying to write the code for an AJAX script. The goal is to let the visitor send a comment through a form (obviously). The form is inside a div that pops up when the visitor clicks on an "add a comment" link and when the form is submitted the result of the form processing apears inside the same div which resizes to fit the size of the result.
The problem I'm trying to solve is that although the resizing and the positioning of the div works for Firefox it doesn't for IE7. In IE7 it does the resizing but the positioning fails Code:

I have problem here I have two div as below:
[CODE <div id="left" style="top:0px;left:0px; width:150px;">
<div id="title1" style="top:auto;left:0px; padding: 4px; overflow: auto; background-color: #8EB4E3;">
<table border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0">
<tr><td></td></tr>
<tr>
<td>OUR SYSTEM</td><td width="11%" height="10"><div align="right">
<img src="../fleet/images/logos/<?=$fleetID?>.png" width="100" height="50" /></div></td>
</tr></table></div>
</div>
<div id="right" style="top:0px;left:250px; width:800px; height:100%">Map goes here.
</div>[/CODE]
The problem I am having is that when the div id="left" does not have any inner div then the right div where it contains map is at 0px. But the moment I put id="title1" in the div id="left" then the map in div id="right" does not stay at the top 0px and it goes down by quite many pixels.

Is there are way to position an element at the bottom right of a container if I don't know the height of the container?
Making it float right is obvious and easy, what I really need is to make the element float bottom/right.
I believe FireFox will give me the computed height of the container, but MSIE tells me nothing but 'auto'.
